Bull's "Creative" Mobile Storage Solution

Another phase of my barn reorganizing project is finished. When I was done and stepped back to look at it, I said "this is pretty redneck" but hey, it suits my needs and budget!

My dad told me I could have his old aluminum truck-bed storage box that he used to use. It's been sitting in his garage for years. I knew right away just what to do with it.

I bolted some Colson total lock casters onto it, put my Steelcase desk on top of it, and voila, quick mobile storage. Saved me from having to build another 4x4 frame for the Steelcase desk. I ripped some lumber down to fit inside the rails for the box, to stiffen them and allow me to use wood screws that I had on hand.

The added bonus is that I now have a TON of storage space for lots of smaller items that will be able to fit inside the long drawers. The top of the desk is high, but it works for me because I am tall. The edge of the desk hits me square in the belt buckle, which I find to be a good height for working on stuff.

I have the desk right at the front of the box, and there is a lot of space behind the desk. So, I found that I can stack six heavy metal ramps back there, plus my wheel chocks. I can also fit a lot of small tool boxes under the middle drawer area of the desk.

Don't laugh too hard at the awkward way it looks! And, sorry for the one blurry picture.

I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it before! :D

And you're not likely to see it again! I don't think many people would let this be seen in their shop

I think it would look less weird if I took the legs off the desk, but as I said, the current surface height works for me.

When you paint it, go with electric pink, snap-on green, baby-**** brown, and plum-crazy purple. This color combination may help, um, highlight the more subtle features of your unique design. That color palette will, at the least, be complimentary to the overall post-industrial, post-modern, post-second-hand composition you have going there.:bounce:

Questions:

Now that the prototype is complete, Are you ready to go into full production?

What are you going to name that thing?

The most sincere form of recycling is reuse.

Congratulations!

It is good to see that I am not the only one that does things like that. You may even find more uses down the road for parts of that Frankenstein creation. I call machines and constructs like that a FrankenMech, not just the imaginary toys gamers play with but real ones.

Looks good to me Bull nothing better than repurposing something to use in the shop and Free is always good :D.

Thanks! I get a kick out of reusing/repurposing/recycling stuff. And no, I'm not a tree hugger :lol_hitti

Isn't desk highjacking illegal? :D

Don't tell anyone :shocking:

What did you name that monstrosity?

I hadn't given it a name. Perhaps you would like to? Maybe:

Bull's ****
FrankenBallz
Hillbilly Hijinx
Redneck Rising
Diamond Plate Plateau
Steelcase Soaring
**** Stack

Now there's something you don't see every day!Looks fine to me.Love how deep the drawers are.

Thanks fellas. I will measure them tomorrow. I think they are 4' deep.

Name possibilities above. Color schemes will be taken into consideration. Full production ready. How many are you ordering? :bounce:

Is the desk bolted to the bottom thing?

Nope! If it starts to move, I'll fasten it. But, the desk is heavy, the diamond plate has texture, and the desk doesn't move even when pushing on it to move the platform.

Thanks for your support. FrankenMech sounds good. Also good to know you've cobbled some monsters together, too. Makes me feel less cold and lonely.

Hey Bull.......what year is your GTO ?

You know, if you could buy those truck boxes cheap and stack them, they would for a hell of alot of storage in a garage. Stack them up on a mobile base (like Bull did) about 4,5 or 6 high and have a mobile work station with a **** load of storage.

I thought about this. My dad has a second, older one he said I can have, too. What I might do is stack it on top of the first, remove the legs from the desk, then put the desk on top. Storage up the yang, and should be around the same surface height for the top of the desk. I need to measure some stuff.

I also might just use it elsewhere. I don't want it in my truck, that much I know!

I like it. What you need from what you have.

I would be inclined to fasten the desk to the base so I could add a vice.

Thank you. That is the idea. Small budget, free stuff, organizational needs; it all came together.

I have two other work surfaces in the barn that might be used for the vise.

Also, to be clear: the title of the thread suggests that this is a "mobile" storage solution. I don't mean that this is something I am going to be wheeling around to be near whatever I am working on. I just mean that I can move it when needed, and quickly and easily, thanks to the casters. I love casters.

Bull if it works for you then it is the right way to do it. I would rather have something thats ugly as hell and usefull than something nice and fancy thats as useful as **** on a boar. Besides being CHEAP means more money to buy tools.

I think 'mobile' is the best option for tools in a shop, especially a small shop. It makes the most use of a limited space. Or one can look at it as being able to pack more tools into a given space.

WOW :puke: But seriously you aren't going to hurt that desk at all with a sledge hammer. Sure you aren't from West Virginia? I've thought about a reality show "Hillbilly Tech" after I've seen some of the abominations my employees make up.

Bull, you're clearly a "form follows function" kind of guy.

On a scale of 1 to Jack Olsen, I'll give it a 3 for looks, 6 for utility.

I love the GTO. I had a 68 that I bought from the original owner and restored. I still remember running my long-board sander back and forth across the rear quarter panels......(that sounds perverted as hell)
But I love that coke-bottle body shape.

Can you tell me about the wall construction behind the GTO? Why was the wall built with the studs(?) at an angle?

I don't think that would work too well. The truck box is much deeper than the desk, so if they were on top, they would be unstable since a large portion would be hanging in thin air.

I never did feel quite right up here in the north. Maybe I do belong in West Virginee!

I can't argue with the rating for looks, but for function it's way above a 6 on my scale. The amount of hidden storage I have in this relatively small corner of the garage is now off the charts. Plus I have the large top surface of the desk to place parts on when I am disassembling a vehicle.

As for the studs, my barn is a Geobarn. A few guys on here saw mine and followed suit. The diagonal framing is a Geobarn trait. They are much stronger than traditional vertical studs, and allow you to nail the shiplap siding directly to the studs; no plywood needs to be put up first. Less time, less material cost, less waste, less weight.

I have been looking for one of those multi-drawer truck boxes, to put under a welding table. I was thinking of just under the top, so it is easy access when standing, and then using it for short pieces, welding supplies, etc.

Looks utilitarian enough for my garage, but way to pretty to be seen in my garage, I don't know what some of these other guys have for standards, but they must be Martha Stewart fans!

Love it Bull, I love my filing cabinet, and am now keeping an eye out for old, sturdy office type furniture.

Bet it would look great with a lick of red paint, maybe do the legs black or silver, couple of nice handles for the desk drawers and it'll look smashing.
