Bumper repair - Plastic welding

Hi Guys,

Thought I’d share a recent project, plastic welding to repair our bumper.

Split right through and “repaired”

And a few more incidents of kerb rash.

So out with the plastic welder.

and

In the end

I used a urethane supply airless plastic welder.

Yes it depends on the material you are welding, it has to match.

Most big parts have it marked somewhere.

If the part isn't marked you can test weld different rods to the piece and try to pull them off. The one that sticks is the one you need to use. Learned this in an ICAR class that at had the privilege of participating in, I was like 12 at the time!

There are also various cutting, melting and burning tests you can conduct.

Snap on was selling a setup on the truck recently that shoots little staple like things into the bumper before you plasti weld it. Really expensive kit like 900 bucks.

There are other ones ou there for less but I think they are very clever.

You can also get 90 degree stapels to help repair corners and flanges.

I melted in some stainless steel mesh into some of the repair sections.

Thanks for posting - went to your site and the US site. I've done this work in bodyshops, . less-so in my resto-shop, but when it comes up I'm glad I learned it. I've used the sliver burn test a few times to determine the make-up of the plastic - works well.

In a pinch, you can also remelt another bumper or portions of the bumper you are repairing (in a non important area) once you remove the paint.

Recently bought a kit from Urethane supply..... top quality tool! I repaired many mounting tabs on a 90cc four wheeler I picked up for the 6yr old.
Sinking the screen material into the plastic makes for a super strong bond.

A friend of mine has a small used car lot. He buys a lot of scratch and dent stuff. He bought that kit and said it payed for itself with the first 3 bumpers he fixed.
