Bunk bed

The wife wanted bunk beds for the two boys, i found a few photos online and basically copied one. Its sturdy as hell and under a hundred bucks.

Looks really nice. What did you use to support the upper mattress?

At the bottom of the 2x8 i glued and screwed a 2x4 lengthwise , then ran 8 2x4 slats with 1/2" plywood on top of that. I was going to use 1/4 for the slats but they were more expensive than the 2x4's.

Technically it's not a bunk bed as the bottom bed is a pedestal bed built out of 2" square tubing i made years ago. It has a really cool retro steel headboard that had to be removed due to space. So the top bed is more of a loft, fit over the existing.

I saw your metal bunk bed, very cool. I thought about adding to the pedestal bed with steel, but decided against it. I am sure in a few years the older one will want to move to the basement. So the loft can accommodate a desk, couch, computer or storage.
