I found this on my property. Will I ruin the temper if I use my burn pile to remove the wood (or a torch)?

The alternative just takes longer.

I'm saving it for reuse.

Meanwhile is a 30' Grady White.

Just drive the broken handle out with a punch. No heat needed.

I wouldn't try to burn out the old handle. there doesn't look to be a whole lot left of it. I would drill and chisel the old handle out.

I would beat it out with an old screwdriver or a punch from the broken end.. shouldnt take more than a minute or 2.

You can always just torch it at that specific area to char the wood pieces enough to loosen and soak it in water. ... it won't affect the temper of the edges... you'll have to get it really hot to affect the temper.

It will take less than five minutes to drive the wood out with a punch and hammer, no need to mess around with a fire.

I don't even have an axe fetish like a lot of dudes, and even I would hate to see it burnt. Gonna do more harm and mess than good.

It will take less time to drill and punch than burn. I've done a few hammers and it takes me less time to drill it out than to find the tools.

No need for any heat, like the others have said use a chisel and punch and knock out the old wood, i do it all the time very easy not rocket science. Buy a new handle and you will be back in business in no time.

That's an awesome find! You might not even need to drill it. If you can get a screw into the wedge and pull that out you may just be able to hammer it out, easy.

Yes you will, cripes, don't heat hardened steel if you don't have to. You can knock that out with an old bolt and a concrete floor, don't burn it out.

I'd cut off the handle or what's left of it to try and give you a decent edge to drive out.

I'd install a new handle and sharpen it and use it, but I wouldn't polish it or anything; that patina is just cool as hell.

Drill it and press it out. Perfect use for those old dull drill bits you haven't thrown away yet. The heels don't look worn on one side so it looks like it didn't see much use before disappearing. But the blade bevel profiles are just not right, they are way too convex. You should re-grind and sharpen both with one bevel 'fatter' than the other for dirty work around roots/etc and the other 'skinnier' for chopping and limbing. Use gloves when you sharpen it.

The only mark is a M on one side.
I found a large single blade axe head but it has a crack right down the middle. It would fly off a new handle.
I found a smaller 3 tine pitchfork head. I'm going to restore that for use also.
