You never know what you are going to run across in somebody’s storage building or garage. I went to look at an old 16” cast iron Duro vertical band saw yesterday. It was a heavily built machine, but had several issues that I wasn’t all that enthusiastic about tackling, even at the price that he was asking for it. I was hoping it might have the wood/metal gearbox on it, but unfortunately it didn’t. He also showed me an old Craftsman belt/disc sander combo that was in decent condition, but couldn’t come up with a price. Then he mentioned, “I have a Burr King in one of the out buildings. Do you know what that is?” So we walked out to see it. It originally came with a 3 phase motor that he had swapped out for an ancient 1/2 hp single phase motor. When he plugged it in to run it, it ran well but made a slightly harsh sounding noise like a bearing was on route to going bad. So we settled on a price and I brought it home. Once I took a closer look at it, it appears that he had positioned the shaft of the replacement motor too close to the Burr King cover, and it was rubbing. You couldn’t see that at first because that area was covered by the belt guard.

Does anybody here have one of these machines? I’m not really sure what the fixture sticking out on the very front is supposed to be for. Does anyone here recognize it? It appears to be lacking a few of the basic attachments that I’ve seen used in a few videos I pulled up, but I guess you could order these machines configured several different ways. Burr King is still in business so I can give them a call on Monday and ask some questions. Any opinions on the quality of these machines?

Maybe? I’m not sure. The guys at the Burr King company will know (I hope). It did come with an unusual belt that the previous owner thought was used for buffing aluminum. I’ve never seen anything like it before. The belt looks pretty worn, and has a texture similar to a buffing wheel.

At least one mentioned in the archives, possibly more. I personally know nothing other than they are supposed to be great.

Burr Kings are great industrial machines and command top dollar. You did well.
Thanks Tool Scrounge! But I didn’t even tell you what I paid for it did I?

It's for grinding radii. Very handy.

That’s what I was looking for! Thank you 472scout. I’ll be replacing the motor with a newer, more powerful one. And I’ll do what looks like some long overdue maintenance.

Burr Kings are the Rolls Royces of belt grinders and tougher than a Cat D-9. We had some ar work that were bought before I was born and went with F-16 production when we moved the line to South Carolina.

Check their website for the correct motor rpm. The 760 was designed with a belt speed of something like 8000 sfm.

BTW, the small wheel attachment to yours is about 675$ new.

My God, I had no idea that attachment was so expensive.

I have a BurrKing 760, the motor should be a 3450~3600 RPM motor. I have seen a number of BurrKings with 1750 motors as replacements, they are sander not grinders at that speed.

That radius attachment is a great addition, as mentioned these are very well made little machines. I would suggest a 1 1/2 or 2 HP motor to get the best results.

I have dozens of vintage American made motors that have been brought back to life, so I’m certain I have at least one that will do the job. Thanks for the specs!

I bought a 760 a few years back that I plan to restore. I've got a 3-phase motor and NEMA 4x VFD ready for it when I get to that step.

IIRC the grinder takes a 2"x60" belt, and from the looks of it, you'd use a 2"x72" belt with that tight radius adapter. Looks sweet!

I was going to see if I could buy some other attachments for it from Burr King, but based on what the attachment it has costs, the others are probably around the same price. Ouch!
