So I am at an auction buying tools as usual and I see this belt sander sitting in a row of shop equipment. Mainly automotive stuff. Take a quick look and see an industrial 1.5 hp TEFC motor, well built and looks heavy.
Figure it's a good one and decide to chase it a bit. Reminded me of ones I have seen on Forged in Fire to finish knives.
Won it pretty cheap, not much competition there that day.
Wasn't as heavy as I thought but still stout.

Found the name and model number on it and Google shows Burr King 760 for $2,600 and up
Holy ****, just hit a home run. Figure put $1200 on it and take a grand.

So I take it to the shop to clean and test.
Huge mistake!! Fires right up and I test it.
I FELL IN LOVE! Oh does it make things smooth and shiney quick.
Refaced a couple of cheap body hammers and tried a few other things. Don't think I can sell it.

Having no knowledge of Burr King, when I mentioned it to some tools buddies, their jealousy was obvious😄

They are really nice machines. I have 3 of them and I will tell you if you think it works nice now, scrap that single phase motor and put a 3phase motor with a VFD on it. When you can set the belt speed and even reverse it it's a whole new machine!

Sounds great and I can do the conversion and may very well have a 3 phase motor. What I don't have is the knowledge on how, why and when to change speeds or direction or for that matter, what grade belt to use. It came with about 10 extra 320 grit belts and about 6 belts that look like a very aggressive scotch brite material. My knowledge of machining and fabrication is limited and I get the impression that is where these machines shine. I have way more machine then my skill set can utilize fully.

Thank you all for the positive comments, it is encouraging. For now I am keeping it and will explore its uses. Every time I have been to that shop, I have used it, which is not conducive to me selling it for a nice profit

As a reseller, I don't divulge what I pay for things, less hassle that way but this would be a walk off home run against your bitter rival.

Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you get burned buying the way I do. Overall, I hold a good margin on what I buy and sell but i do put a lot of time and effort into it.

I think they refer to these as conditioning belts. I tried some on my DynaBrade 3/8 x 18” belt sander, and it does a fantastic job of removing the sanding marks from a coarse abrasive.

Hey Fat...You are missing two parts to your 760....one is the rest that goes out front and the other is the backing platen that goes behind the belt and provides a rigid stop to grind against. If you have any need for a belt sander in your shop, don't eve get rid of that 760. With a little care, it will outlast your grandkids and probably theirs as well.
We've got a bunch of early units that became the 760 series, that were bought in the late 50's and early sixties, still sanding away at work.

Very nice addition to any shop. I have drooled over them and wanted one for a while now, just can't pull the trigger.

I do use my disc/belt sander a LOT though so the fact that I have a means of metal removal probably keeps me from making a stupid decision and buying a new one.

Thanks, knew the rest was missing, didn't know there was a backing plate behind the belt. To be honest, with what little I have used it, I like not having the backing plate. The rest would be handy but I have another belt sander that has a rest. Also missing the belt guard which I may just order one. Obviously I don't know what I am doing, just know I like it. Kinda like the first time I had, er, um,,,,, relations with a young lady :ROFLMAO:

I've got that machine and three other Burr Kings in my abrasive/sanding area. They are top notch American made machines. All parts are available from Burr King. The backing platen is pretty handy if you want to sand the edge at a true 90 degrees. A table/rest can be easily fabbed from a piece of angle iron, since it does have the support arm. If you got this for under $600-700, it's definitely a keeper. With mine, it's a rare project that doesn't involve at least one of my Burr Kings.
