Bus Barn - Build Thread

After being only a reader of this forum for a few years I finally get to post my build! I am building a 30x50x11 pole building to house my old Chevy School Bus that I am restoring along with my 91 Toyota Supra, tractor and a host of wood working machinery i've acquired from my grandfather. The building is a typical pole building using laminated posts, steel roof with double bubble insulation and scissor trusses; however I wanted to go a step further with the siding. I decided to use 7/16" OSB with Timbercrest board and batton vinyl siding to match my house (sort of). On the front gable end I will be putting vinyl shake siding up above the overhead door and stone veneer down at the bottom to break it up a bit. The OHD will be 16' wide x 11'-3" tall. A single man door to the right of this and a few windows down the right side of the building.

Progress to date: I've excavated and drilled holes and today the framing started to take shape:

Tomorrow will see the scissor trusses, roofing and metal soffits go up.

ok and here is my old beast. I know its not like "antique" old but i just had to have it since I rode to school in it and it technically got me into mechanics/trucks/buses etc.....

Got quite a bit done this weekend with just my father-in-law and my father. Got a good amount of sheathing done (7/16" OSB) as well as installed 2 windows and the man door. We also started to tackle the roof and got the hardest part behind us (actually installing the first panel):

Now for the next three days the forecast is all rain so I'll have to hope for some nice weather next weekend.

Does anyone have any close up pictures of their soffits with over hang (metal roofs only)?

Alright well its been a while but I got quite a bit done in the last few weeks. The roof is complete (minus the soffit and fascia) and the floor was poured today!

So I am contemplating some sort of transom/hopper windows down the sides across the top. I really like the natural light that comes through around the portion where I havent installed the OSB board. Maybe like 3 transom windows per side. Any sources out there for windows such as these?

Its been a long time since I've posted and its mainly because my progress is rather slow. I can only really work on it for a few hours after work and weekends. Anyway:

I decided last minute to buy and install these awning windows. I got them on Ebay. They were built for a military base in Texas that didnt need them and are bullet proof and VERY heavy. I couldnt pass them up at only $65 a piece. I figure having them will allow a little more natural light and also some cross ventilation.

Soffits and Fascia:

Garage Door:
My first Garage Door Install. It surprisingly went very smooth considering its a rather large door to put up (16'x11' 3"). And I love the Liftmaster 8500 jackshaft opener!:

Lighting and Electrical:
I have a 200amp feed underground to the barn which will be great. Once I got the breaker panel good to go and the power turned on I was ready to install the lighting. I installed 8 - T5 8' fixtures and truthfully its plenty of light. I thought for sure it wouldnt be and that either 10 or even 12 would be necessary but I was wrong. I guess if they were T8s or T12s then I would have needed more fixtures but with these T5's I am thoroughly impressed. I have 3 zones for the lights. The front most 2 fixtures are on 1 zone, the remaining 3 lights on the left side are on the second zone and the remaining 3 lights on the right side are on the third zone.

I spent the labor day weekend with my father installing the vinyl siding and lower stone. I used Airstone that I got at Lowes. Its the fake stuff that is easy to install, requires no mortar and can be cut with a hacksaw. With only $200 in materials i'd say it was well worth it.

I bought ABTCO board and batten vinyl siding, 5" white lineal trim and shake siding from Menards. All of which went up very nicely.

I got 3 of these (2 for over the garage door and a slightly smaller diameter one for over the man door). They should be here next week. In the meantime, more siding to be done.

Where did you get these lights? I am looking for a similar fixture for the front of my shop.

Might have been caught already - NM wire needs to be stapled within about 8" of the exit from a box. The switch box in on of your picture doesn't look like that has been done.

Wow, great looking shop !! The use of different textures and mixing horizontal and vertical lines is perfect. All the windows surely eliminate need to have interior lights on, when natural light can be used.

Thank you for that compliment. Since I was building a pretty standard/basic shaped structure I wanted to still give it some dimension and "residential" feel to match my house.

I got the lights that I scored from build.com installed and man are they bright. The lower pictures show the new driveway that I had completed which is really tying things together.

What remains is the siding down the left side and the siding on the rear. Should take only a few days - its finding those few days as being the hard part.

yeah but look closer at the one on the left. Its slightly out of round. It came in this way and I'm debating on making a fuss about it with the supplier.

I modeled the building in Alias Studiotools which I acquired years ago as an Industrial Designer. The renderer was a third party trial called bunkspeed.
