I am looking for some butcher block tops for some tool carts, the Ikea tops are too narrow. I have 6 cabinets that are 30 W X 27 1/2 D, I would like to put butcher block tops on these. They could be any thickness from 1 1/4 up and unfinished, I just need a source for the material that won't cost 100.00 a piece.

The IKEA tops are all 25 inches deep and shipping on the 30X60 tops that are 150 bucks or so push them up to 225 or more. Anybody have a source for this stuff?

I found a bunch on Craigs list after we had some severe flooding around here. Manufacturing shop had to get rid of them mainly due to the bases being toast. I left him the bases and took the tops. Most were 36-40 wide x 60" long. Actually had to cut them down.. They have some holes and were used but a quick hit with da sander and new oil and we are good to go. I got 6 of them for $100.. I beleive the guy that was pulling in the drive as I was leaving offered me $300.. ;-)

Check out lowes/homedepot or any other place that has people that do flooring. Offer to buy their pull outs (or maybe trade for your labor if you are really cheap). Also put a "want" on freecycle. You'll have to glue it up but it doesn't get much cheaper than that!

I bought some Grizzly butcher worktops, found cheapest at the time on Amazon, made in USA as well..
They come in different sizes, I know you mentioned unfinished but these look nice.
Butcher block does dent but cleans up nice. I use pieces of the packing material for protection when rebuilding engines etc. I got welding burns after 2 days..

Use this and just rip it down with a table saw. Use the left overs as a backsplash.

Cheap is hard. I have two Ikeas. The one I got most recently wasn't as deep as I wanted to I spaced in a 2x6, which isn't a very elegant solution. But the truth is that the far back of the bench is not where the heavy work gets done. You can see it pretty clearly in this picture:

oako.jpg

The best deal I got was Reliable Tools on Ebay, where I bought a whole bench for (if I remember right) $62, because the top was 1-3/4" Maple butcher block. But that's no way to get a big set. There's Habitat stores and Craigslist too, but the danger is you use so much of your own time searching that the end cost is not so great.

One idea would be to go the Sears/Lumber-Liquidators/Ikea route, and buy one additional top to rip into 3"-4" wide lengths -- and then pin and glue them on for the extra width on the other six.

I have one of the tops from Sears. Not sure what kind of wood it is but it isn't oak. Cut it in half and made to 24" X 48" carts. I am very happy with the quality.

A lot of suggestions,

I wanted to avoid major surgery on the construction of these tops. I have considered splicing a piece on the narrow tops, I also looked at the really wide Ikea tops. I have 40 tons of metal working machines, I have NO wood working machines. Jointing the edges and splicing the tops is a simple process when you have the tools, when all you have is a hammer everything is nails.

I am not pressed to find some today or next week, I still have to refinish them and a ton of other things. The funny thing is I remember when 30 inch tops were the standard , now it seems like they have shrunk to 25.5 inches! Please keep the suggestions coming, the tops only have to be an 1 1/4 for all intents and purposes They will mount directly to a steel cabinet top designed to bear 500 pounds or more. The tops would see fairly light duty but protect cutting tools from damage.

I got a great butcher block top from a reseller, similar to Jack's Reliable Tools if I understand correctly. The kind of guy you want to look for goes into closed assembly plants, factories, industrial centers, etc. and buys lots of old stuff - StrongHold cabinets, workbenches, all kinds of great stuff. Jack's build inspired me to start looking for this kind of thing and after a couple weeks I found a 72x30x2.25" maple butcher block for $130. I believe I located the seller via ebay but the butcher block wasn't listed, it's just something he told me he had after I'd gotten in contact with him.

I also remember seeing a link recently to a site supplying all kinds of butcher block sizes, pretty cheap. I'll see if I can find it again...

edit: meh, no dice finding that link, sorry. Tough when I can't remember anything about the thread or who posted in it!

This cabinet is 48 Inches wide by 22 Inches deep by 35 Inches tall...not including the butcher block.

I'll get back in touch.

Here's one I made for my tool box on the cheap. I used scrap oak semi trailer flooring. The boards are 1-5/16" thick about 12" wide. I used a tongue and groove joint to make the width I needed. It was a little work, but I only paid $1 per linear foot for the floor boards. Any trailer repair shop should have some scrap laying around. Good luck!

How about this idea if you have 5-6 clamps at home.

Make your own with standard 2x4's at 1.5" thick each, so 18 would equal your thickness of 27". at $2 each, that is about $40-45 including glue and a disposable roller to spread it for a 27" x 96" x 3.5" thick section. If the 2x4's are straight when you start, the random directions of the lamination would likely keep them pretty straight.

If you want them pretty, have someone plane the top smooth after the glue sets.

"Standard" 2x4's are usually soft pine or Douglas Fir that make piss poor tops.

The tops at Global are with shipping right at 100.00 each, keep em coming. The suggestions to make them is not practical, if I had the equipment I wouldn't have asked.

I've been toying with the idea of making my next tool box bench top as follows:
cut to size and laminate 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood together
spray the whole top and sides with spray adhesive
cover with thick cow rawhide
oil

I did the math and it would actually be less than most block tops, really strong, and age beautifully with every drop of oil over the years.

I bought a 12' Brazilian cherry countertop from lumber liquidators that was rejected by the customer due to defects. It was wider and longer than I needed and I was able to cut off all the damage and blemishes.

A stor local to you may have something, as well. I wouldn't brag about the quality of it though. It needed a lot of TLC before I installed it.

I just want to warn anyone buying Ikea butcher block, open the boxes right away and inspect. I did a kitchen for a contractor who insisted on buying the Ikea's. When I opened the boxes the butcher blocks were warped big time, 3/4 of an inch in 8 feet. The 320 mile round trip to replace all three pieces ate up any savings. I want to add that I have Lumber Liquidators maple top in my own kitchen, it's much nicer quality than Ikea.

Are you looking for the butcher block for asthetics or durability? I found some solid core office doors at my Habitat Restore and they work perfect. Two inch thick solid wood. They are stained a dark color, but I've seen them stained light colors too. And cheap at $30 each.

I want both looks and durability, these are tool carts / work stations for machines. Each cart will have the primary tooling and hand tools for that particular machine. A lot of the tooling is dense, heavy is a relative term, measuring tools are easily damaged and, I prefer the look of butcher block. I have some butcher block work benches and some metal top benches, I don't really want to add another type of bench in the area these are used. This is kind of an image thing. The shop is not only a work shop but, a focal point in the larger picture.

McMaster-Carr has butcher block tops, but they're not exactly cheap. I bought my tops from them. The have a bunch of sizes and deliver next day. McMaster's tops are manufactured by John Boos. Grainger might have them too. Don't forget shipping charges as these ship by truck.

Don't know how much of your equation is "looks" and how much is "function", but a solid core door might be an option. One with damage on one side should be close to free. I have also considered LVL beam cut offs as a good "functional" option, but I never pursued it. Those things are bullet proof.

From CL in Santa Rosa CA;

Funny I have been looking at that add for a while now, since it is local.

I want to know how hard it would be to make a nice top. I have quite a few 4"x6"s that I was thinking about sticking together and milling down with a router on a rail. Has anyone done this?

I found some really nice 4X8s of hardwood plywood at Home Depot, very "in-expensive" to build my bench with, gobs of poly, very pleased. I couldn't spring for butcherblock myself. ...just sayin'

I do want butcher block tops and I am pretty sure we have covered the major sellers. I am looking for perhaps a company somewhere that makes tops that is NOT on a search engine. Factoring shipping into any purchase is the total I use. I am in L.A. and I can take the tops with me or they could ship to Hutchinson, either way if they are not local to one of these locations shipping is a significant cost.

The benchmark number for the tops is right about 100.00 delivered, can you find 30x30 or 30x60" tops ( I can cut them in half) that would be less? I may seem cheap and I am not saying I aint! but, I have a lot of things to buy and a hundred dollars here and there add up. I don't want to use a slab of hardwood or plywood, I will buy the butcher block regardless. I am not looking to make anything, I already said I have very limited wood working equipment. The comments here got side tracked, many creative ideas but, honestly, I am just looking for the best price on what I want to use.
