I am using C.R. LAURENCE 777BL CRL Black 777 Butyl Rubber to seal an aluminum window frame to the fiberglass siding of an RV. As i tighten the frame excess will ooze out which I need to clean. Looking at the tube it has no clean up instructions. I called the manufacturer and talked to a lady who didn't really seem to know what i was asking. She said "use a rag". I advised her I planned to use a rag but I would like to know what chemical or liquid I can use to break it down during the clean up process of excess material. She asked her supervisor and she apparently also said "there is no chemical" you can use for cleanup. At that point I was done and just said thank you. Has anyone used this material? It is VERY gooey and will NOT clean up w/ a rag, i need to break it down. I think I will try mineral spirits but if anyone has any suggestions for breaking down a butyl rubber for cleanup I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Dave

That's probably fine - I did the same thing recently and I used acetone. Pretty easy cleanup actually.

Thanks guys. I just ended up using mineral spirits and it broke down the butyl very nicely and didn't touch the trim paint. I'm surprised this company who makes the product didn't/couldn't recommend this.

The problem is that you didn't buy it from CRLaurence. That is a professional box quantity product. The stuff you want to know is either on the side of the box, or in page N136 of the product bulletin. This is one of the reasons CRLaurence doesn't sell retail.

Understood. I find it pretty short sighted of them to not have a simple line for cleanup. They have a bunch of other product details, what to do if you get it in your eyes, on your skin, etc. so unsure why they exclude that really. Also quite embarrassing when you call them and they cannot even tell you the clean up of a product they sell/make. And this was the line to call for product information.
