yes sir, this house and barn are in TN, AND in a rural area, like you said there are NO codes. :lol_hitti I'll def keep you guys updated, thanks.
Think you're gonna be surprised about codes when you actually start work....I also am working on a project in rural (way rural) TN - back on the edge of Dale Hollow Lake real close to KY on a road that deadends into the lake where, back in the day before OSHA, a ferry was there to take your car to the other side.

To set a new meter base in Putnam, Overton or Picket counties (the area where our project is locted), a permit & inspection is needed - & that's not just this little area, its STATEWIDE the county engineer told me! We started pulling permits today & learned that we need a septic certificate before they'll issue a permit for a new meter base.

Now, this house has been standing since before 1950, since before electric power was even available in the area - the house was wired in 1951 & hooked to the local electric coop then....they have records going back as far as they keep records & the house has power today & the inspector knows that...heck, we even applied for a new nighttime security light (the big ones like on a street in a city) & they said it would be installed within 2 weeks, no problem. But, new rules apply to new construction the county or state are not doing!

The septic they want a certificate for was built in 1951-52 back when you just dug a hole & built your own....the county and state have no record of a system ever being buillt even though we've used if forever.....they're trying to figure out how to handle that one since there's no certificate saying a state approved septic system is in place (Oh, there are also inspections for septic systems throughout TN - to code!).

I'm not one of the "snobs" or "nervous people in here". I'm just pragmatic.

I hope you don't start seeing what I'm seeing; but, if you do, we'll learn how to navigate the maze together.

Just make sure you keep the power hooked up all during your rehab....I chose to set a new meter base so I can tear everything out (couldn''t do that without disconnecting the power to the fuse panel) but will need electricity while I'm rebuilding from scratch (this project is almost a gut & start anew).

Again, keep us posted - I'm real interested in your progress.

Oh, how close are you to my TN project?

Once a fire starts in this thing, it will progress fast - especially with all that drop down expected from the Styro. Too many opportunities for fire - good thing its detached. Hope this doesn't reflect the construction of the main dwelling.

If a fire starts in any friggin' building - especially a shop - it'll progress "fast"- especially with all that fuel, paint, oil....

Look up....the sky is NOT falling!

Look at the snobs come out of the woodwork in this post. I am the first one to bring up code, right Rinny :)? One thing all the people talking about code are forgetting is he is not subject to todays code even if there is a code in his area. I am an electrician and I would have no problem having a fuse box providing the wiring is in decent shape as he OP has said it is. Anyone who fears a a fuse box because it's a fuse box is clueless. I'd rather sleep in a house with a fuse box than a house with FP or Zinsco breakers.

Ha.....I also have no problem with an old fuse box, old cambric wire, or even knob and tube -- assuming properly done and maintained....but................ some of the construction here appears to be a bit of a hybrid -with some of the features - the old wood stove with the short horiz pipe, the proximity of combustible materials, the co-location of combustible liquids, etc, etc, suggesting an opportunity for sordid events. However, I agree..the fuse box in self doesn't scare me as much as a FP breaker......

short pipe? that stove is off the wall almost 5 feet, how much further u wanna go? Also the stove is not being used as of now, as it has been removed by the current owner. And any combustible materials u see are the current owner's, not mine so i cant do much about that till i get moved in. Thanks for the backup on the fuse panel.
