I found a used IR 2135 TiMax for sale locally. The guy wants $150. How can I determine if what I am buying is worth it?

check for heavy body damage, make sure the drive turns easily, I have seen a fair amount where it will turn then lockup and then click as the hammers move but the motor doesn't.

Check the direction selector doesn't move to freely, most have a roll pin that the knob attaches to the shaft with and a few I have worked on have sheared meaning you can spin the knob round and round.

check for rusty stains around the exhaust where the compressor used wasn't supplying dry air.

What Chammyman posted:

Keep in mind that a new one is about $280.00

.

Yeah, always have to keep the new price in mind. Amazon lists a "tune up kit" for $20. Would that bring it back to "new"?

You should be able to rotate the anvil a full 360 without forcing it (you're trying to feel if the hammers, hammer frame, or anvil are broke). The housing shouldn't be cracked. Look at the screen at the base of the inlet for gunk. Give a good look over of the anvil for its condition. Shake the whole thing hard. Some click-clack is ok (the clearance between the mechanism and the motor and hammer case bushing allows a bit); loose rattle isn't.

"New" I would define as new vanes, and new mechanism...probably more than $20 (it costs us more than that so it should be more anyway). New bearings/seals/grease/etc won't ever hurt a tool though.

Well I bought it for $140 with 3 Snap-on impact sockets and 1/2 quart of oil (at least the guy was oiling it!). The anvil spun nicely and smoothly in both directions. The power knob felt like it was doing something. The direction selectors seemed to function. If I blew into the air inlet with the trigger down the anvil spun in the proper direction. It didn't rattle if shaken side to side. There is a bit of end play that could be heard, but I think that is normal. Overall wear seemed very minimal.
