buying damaged air compressor

Any idea where damaged air compressors from Lowes/Home Depot go?
I am looking for one of the generic 5hp 60gal single stage jobs with a damaged tank,, I just need the motor/comp.

WAG - They go back to the manufacturer to be tested and refurbished.
Otherwise, if the manufacturer doesn't want them, they should be dismantled beyond use and sent to recycling.

Several years ago, I bought a California Air Tools compressor from Amazon. The box was BEAT TO DEATH. It looked like it had rolled down several conveyor belts.

Amazon did not really want it back (especially when I told them the box was useless) so we negotiated a BIG discount. I did spend a chunk of the discount on the couple of broken items and I upgraded the hoses and the power cord.

Without knowing where you are located, I can't give more specifics. But HD sells their stuff by the pallet thru Genco. There may or may not be one in your area. There is one here. Their starting prices are 50% of retail, but they will take less if you show cash and negotiate with the owner. They always have lots if toilets, lighting, smoke detectors, electrical and some plumbing. Tools are hit or miss.

There are unclaimed freight and damaged returns sellers in every region of the US. Look for multiple CL, equipment trader, etc. ads that seem like they were written by the same guy. If similiar ads show up and the address is a large, cheap warehouse, you have found one.

Some actually advertise openly as what they are.

Yep. We have a local place that sells Northern tool returned items on Craigslist. They buy a truckload at a time and post 50-75 ads each delivery describing any defects. Fairly good cash discount especially when buying multiple items.

I know of 2 spots in KY, one is a booth at a flea market, the other advertised on CL and was in a little town called Lietchfield, KY. Don’t know how they were getting them.

The HDs near me, at least in the past , would sell used stuff, probably from the rental dept. That stuff was beat to hell, parts missing, broken. To be avoided at all cost. They had a discontinued a DeVibviss pressure washer. It had a Honda GX and a Cat pump so I was interested. The salesman said it was an unused display model. The replacement model used cheaper parts. He gives me a good price, I get it home and it is leaking oil all over the place. The pump head bolts were loose, the pistons were trashed. I took it right back but after a search of many local branches I found the old model I wanted, new in the box. My point is, NEVER buy anything except new stock from HD, and then check twice. HD and Lowes will put a return back on the shelf if the customer says it is good and just changed their mind. That is not always the truth. I once bought a Dremel kit at Lowes and the tool was some creep's old tool that he scammed Lowes with. I'm glad they took that one back. Now I buy nothing that looks like it was ever opened.
