I was looking for a welding table and they have the best price (imagine that! even cheaper than Zoro..)
and I can pick it up at one of their locations.

I tried to checkout and it seems that I can buy it , as someone buying for personal use, without an account with them / or a business license. I didn't think this used to be the case, just wanted to check with you guys.

They have no restrictions on who they sell to. I've bought lots of things from them for personal use with a personal credit card.

At least in Colorado, you used to have to have a state tax license to buy there. I would have to get an employer to let me use his # if I needed something for personal purchase. It's been a few years since I went there, and I don't know whether this is still the case.

I always thought a person could buy there...I've been buying there for years. But you might want to check with your employer, they might get a discount you could take advantage of. Unless you don't want them to know about any side stuff you do.

What's the part and what's the advertised cost? I'm curious to see if I get it cheaper.

Still $335, but I get free ground shipping. Some things we get no discount on and other things we pay pennies on the dollar it seems like. And we really have not negioated much at all for a steeper discount, unlike a former employer who negioated hard and subsequently gave all of their business to Grainger.

You should look at the one HF offers. very similar and only 70.00. it has a lot of good reviews.

That is the table I am replacing The metal is very thin, about 1/16".
and the zinc coating gives obnoxious fumes when it hot.
It "folds" but it takes alot of space.

The miller is probably not 5x better, but it folds down to about a 1" sheet which is a valuable feature for me.

In my area, I just used it to check inventories of a particular store for the items I needed, then just go to the counter and ask them for it... so I don't deal with wasted trips to them if they don't stock it.... they will be able to get you the item... just make sure you know the web price and their price at the store... sometimes it's different...

Company I worked for had a corporate account with Grainger...someone could order from a personal account cheaper than with our "discounted" corporate account.

@ hammerhead, I guess that could be the case. It might be "the deal" hooked up by the purchasing agent. My experience I had at an employer was we got the stuff pretty cheap. We were a small company w/ OEM standing. We would be encouraged to buy stuff through them. The owner said the more spent there the bigger the discount he could negotiate for the business. But this was a lifetime ago...

I don't Grainger. I McMaster. ;)

Or buy somewhere else for less. Grainger gives you quite the markup to pay for their local inventory, large number of "semi-retail" branches and glossy catalog.

As far as I know, Grainger will sell to anyone, but will only give good prices to large companies who know how to give the salesman the best hand jobs.

I can't stand dealing with companies who play favorites with accounts. Offer your products at a fair price with no gimmicks and good service and I will buy from you. Make me deal with a ****** salesman who is pushy and makes me jump through hoops to get the same price as McMaster, well, go **** yourself. I will buy elsewhere.

A few years ago I was given the task of setting up a company toolbox for the maintenance department. I made a list, brand names and part numbers. Put it out for bid. Grainger won the bid with the lowest price. When the order came in, I discovered the salesman had replaced stuff with their ****** Westward house brand to cut costs and win the bid. That was the last time I ever had Grainger quote anything.

Grainger gives vacations and other incentives to purchasing agents who buy from them over other vendors. A company I worked at found out the purchasing agent was getting vacations from Grainger and spending WAY more money with them vs other vendors. She didn't last long with us.

For the life of me, I don't know why people buy things from them. I can get literally anything they sell from another vendor cheaper and with less hassle.

OP, if you take the quote for a Miller table to another company, they are very likely to match the Grainger price. I know my welding supply house has told me point blank they will match or beat Grainger's price even if they lose money on a few things because its worth it to them to take Grainger's business.

I don't know when you checked your prices but I just checked and Zoro is getting $211.01 and Grainger is getting $235.41. Grainger owns Zoro and I have never known them to be cheaper on anything. As it is over $50, Zoro will also ship it for free.
It is good to know that Grainget now sells to anyone. I used to work for a government agency that bought enough from Grainger to qualify for the highest discount. Your discount depends on how much you buy from them. They gave the employees a courtesy account number that got us the same discount. We just paid out of pocket plus tax. Grainger list prices are high but big customers pay a LOT less. I would guess that Zoro pricing is comperable to Grainger top tier discount pricing. An $8 V belt pulley I bought from Zoro is $13 list at Grainger. Except for a local emergency buy, I have no reason not to stay with Zoro.

The USPS was a big Grainger customer but cut them off when they found out Grainger was running some kind of price scam on them. They did not buy from them for quite a while but have since made up.

Here in Chicago, Grainger behaves like every store.
I recently bought 2 bags of cotter pins (totalling <$5) from Grainger, because hardware stores don't have the metric specs I need.

  • visit the website to find the part number,
  • go to the store or order online
  • they will give you the stuff if in stock, or will order for you so that you can pick up at a later date
  • pay with credit card.
  • no business account is needed. Nor even a personal account.
