I've made a few tours of the shops around here - fergetaboutit. They want more for used **** than Sears gets for new Craftsman stuff sometimes. I guess they think that the trade guys will come back and pay that top dollar to get their junk back the next time they get a good contract. I ain't buying it, not at those prices. And also - if it's not gold, silver or a gun they are pretty much uninterested. If you want it, buy it., If not, get out.

For y'all who have pawn shops that have too high prices try this: Select several tools that you would be willing to buy but that you don't have to have. Have some cash in your pocket. Take tools to counter, make counter offer with money in your hand. If after dickering he dosen't deal, put the money in your pocket, put the tools back and walk out. He may deal when you put the money up. If not, next time you are in the shop he will remember you and may deal. If he's unreasonable, cross that place off the list of regular places to visit. In all your dealings remain pleasant and kid the guy a little. Oh, like the other posts said, know the value of what you are going to buy. If he has high prices on tool truck tools, remind him that they are USED tools and if you want new you can get them off the truck.

I have good luck with smaller mom and pop pawn shops around here.

Scored a Kennedy top chest, torque wrenches, good little kobalt road set, etc.

Some of the major chains have "codes" they put on the tags so they know how much they paid for them without having to look the item up. If you know the code it makes haggling much easier because you know what they paid and you can make an offer where they can still make a profit... ;)

As the mood, and pocket book, strikes.
I rarely go with a need in mind.
It is a pure, old fashioned, impulse buy when I get something.

I am not a big pawn shop junkie but there is one not far from the cafe where I eat breakfast. Drop in occasionally. If I buy it is usually something from the $1 loose hand tool bins. I have learned that the owner is a deal maker and his son does not have a clue. I did score a $200 precision torque wrench for $5. So far, I have never used it.

I stop by a few once in a while... one in particular. I've gotten a few decent items for fair prices. They have their share of worn out / beat up stuff, but generally they're quite decent. Last time I was in there, they'd marked down their loose sockets but I didn't have time to dig through the bins... maybe next time if they're still there.

Some of my best stuff has come from a pawn shop. We have a couple mom & pop type shops around town & I hit them up once every payday. Lots of vintage stuff in pretty good shape for the most part. Some China junk, but mostly vintage USA stuff.

I promptly relieved them of a pebbled Plomb 3/8 ratchet last time I was in there. For the top dollar price of $6 bucks.

Here, to pawn something your have to have ID, be finger printed, picture taken, then everything gets a 60 day hold. Cops come around and check all the time. Problem is now people sell there stuff on CL and don't bring it to the pawn shop. Realy can't brame them 10% of retail is lame.
