Would it be ok to buy a new torque wrench on Ebay or should I buy it from somewhere else? Thanks for the help.

WTH are you asking:confused: That question is so loaded, it can't even be answered.

What brand?
What warranty?
Reputable seller/reputable brick and mortar store?
Why would it matter where you buy it, as long as it's a reputable place?

Seriously, though, a lot of it depends on the brand and the price. If the thing has a lifetime warranty for calibration, and it's a savings, go for it.

If it's only a $10-$20 savings on something without a lifetime calibration warranty, I probably wouldn't.

The brand is SK 1/2 inch 20-150 ft lbs. Basically I was wondering if it was smart to stay away from torque wrenches on ebay. Since they seem to be delicate, I didn't know if you were better off buying from a store or if you would be fine buying it on ebay from an individual.

If it's this one:

74151 1/2" 20-150 ft.lb. (1ft.lb.) 20.80" $ 173.51

It has a 1 year warranty, which may or may not cover calibration.

If it's not broken, if the price is right (at present, it looks like it is), and if you know somewhere to get it calibrated for cheap (if needed), then by all means, do it.

I bought a Craftsman 1/2" drive torque wrench at a local hawk-shop for $10, because it appeared to be brand new. It was - everything works great on it. If it had been much more than $20, I wouldn't have done it, since a new one isn't that horrible of a price.

Shop around, though.

On eBay alone, there's people selling the same thing, brand new, for $90:

On Amazon:

Or Google Shopping:

Honestly, after seeing that, were it me, with the used torque wrench being $60-ish right now, I'd spend the $100, and buy a brand new one.

I got a great deal on a Mac 250 ft.lb. torque wrench on ebay---less than $150 delivered in like new condition. I use it almost everyday at work. Be a smart shopper, don't buy the first one you see and pay attention to the sellers feedback.

Thanks for the help everyone. I will take your advice kythri and buy it new. I have a couple of other questions I hope someone could help me with. Should I get a 1/2 or 3/8 inch torque wrench?
Between these two torque wrenches, which would you recommend purchasing?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I just want to make sure that I make the right decision.

It depends on what you are planning to use it for. IMHO, you need several torque wrenches and ranges to cover the entire vehicle. In my shop, I have 4 clickers and 4 dial wrenches.

For the diy'er, you can't beat the Husky clicker wrenches at Home Depot. Read an article several years ago that they are the best quality for the $. They are around $75 the last time I checked.

Based on my own personal use and experience, I'd start with a 20-150 1/2" clicker, as it sees the most use in my shop (wheels, etc.).

There's a couple others I want to get - a couple of beam or dial type in inch-pound and foot-pound, for some different applications.

For the drive size, as Jay50 said, it depends on what you're going to use it for - are you going to use it on bigger sockets, more so than on the smaller stuff? If so, I'd go with 1/2" over 3/8".

Hell, if you're seriously looking at S*K, you might just as well get teh Craftsman Microtorks. They go on sale all the time...

If you were really serious about a tq wrench, I'd recommend Proto or MAC, Snap On, etc.
