I usually go for 50% of new value, or the current equivalent. Obviously there are some exceptions to this rule, when purchasing higher end, like new items or rare tools.

Depends if we are talking power tools or hand tools. For these prices I am going to talk about yardsales. For power tools, if cordless I run for the hills since they are always old as **** and dead as a door nail, With corded tools I don't really have a set price, if I need something I will try to get it for as cheap as I can. With hand-tools I try to get each item for less than a $1, closer to a dollar for larger things such as pliers or snips, adjustable wrenches. If I see something I need or want then I will spend more than a dollar. Absolutely no more than $.75 a socket When I buy at yard sales I tend to sweep up the lot of stuff and I expect to get cheap stuff since it is a yardsale.

For a very nice truck brand wrench with no rust i'll give up to $5 and I'll give $10-$12 for the really big ones. Price always goes down with chrome peel or engraving.
Sockets, .50 a piece usually, .75 for bigger or really nice ones. Sometimes as much as a dollar for truck brands.
Pliers usually a dollar or two. Up to $5 for nice big channellocks or things of that nature.
Adjustable wrenches and ratchets usually around $5 for decent condition ones. Big adjustable wrenches sometimes as much as $25 and really nice big ratchets sometimes as much as $50. Usually no more than $20 though.
Air and battery powered tools... Depends on condition cuz you never know if it's gonna work or not. I tend to shy away froth them usually. Bought a really nice mac 1/2 impact with a long shank at a pawn shop for $65 one time just for the hell of it and it turned out to be the best I've ever owned.
Go with your gut and always remember to bundle! It makes the price per item drop substantially!

all depends on my mood, and if it's a want or a need...
tools i NEED, i'm liable to pay a little more for, tools i WANT are usually impulse buys, and it depends on available CASH in my pocket
i sorta stay with 50% of retail for new or barely used tools, the price goes dawn fast for visibly used stuff...
i get a LOT of my extra hand tools (truck and industrial brands) out of a $1 bins at the pawn shop..

Agree, 50% for barely used, though I shoot for 33% if I have time/patients. Tough finding good deals in large metro areas like NYC.
