Hi all,

I was watching a short video of a guy restoring a Tonka dump truck. He had a c-clamp style riveting tool. Does anyone know who makes/carries one? I looked at McMaster's site and don't find one there.

Sorry if I am missing the obvious!

Thanks,

Mark

...video added to the original posting. It is possible that it is a "home-made" type.

Harry Epstein's has a rivet setting tool- R-100 Hesston rivet tool that may accomplish what you're looking to do. It may take some altering, but they're only a few bucks.

Hey guys.

Not to be too critical, but did any of you watch the OP's video? Or look at my link? It is the EXACT tool?!?!? MADE FOR RESTORING TONKA toys.

I don't get why you keep making guesses when the question has been answered?

I realize the website says it is out of production, but still? More guesses? Really?

Sorry to hijack with a rant, but please read and understand all the other replies before making the same reply as others. It is repetitive and uninformative replies that clutter up and make it hard to find useful information on this site.

ok all done.

I get your frustration steaks&anvils, but here is how I see it. The OP has a problem, and asks for help. And this board is a great resource because people like you have the knowledge or do the work to find correct answers.

If I think I know how to help when a member asks a question, I post an answer. I might not want to want to read through a hundred other answers. That is work for the OP, and nothing for a helpful member like yourself to be upset about.

I know this is a custom type tool made out of a c-clamp. Has anyone figured out the ends on the c-clamp to make your own?
I need one and they are sold out everywhere I’ve looked.
Thanks for the help

Appreciate the response. Whoo, a little steep for me. Has anyone figured out how to make the dies and convert them to a regular c-clamp?

Pretty sure most people posting here were trying to help, giving suggestions, not wanting to actually have the tool.

The dies look like simple dimples?

try taking the pad off the c-clamp screw, drill a dimple in the end? Use a dremel round bur to do that.

A smaller clamp like a bridge clamp or hanger clamp might be better to modify. They are smaller and might have finer threads.

If you notice the pintonka tool is a custom c-clamp body, has fine threads and the dies thread into the c-clamp body.

Remember, the guy selling the tool had to work out all these issues and come up with a marketable product. That is why it costs $100. How much effort and time/cost materials are you wanting to expend? If the tool actually works well and the finished rivets are nice, it might be worth your money to just buy one.

If you hack a tool, will the rivets end up looking good? think about it.

Looking at the video again (thanks PFSard), I think you can make this tool pretty easily.

The clamp used is an "edging clamp" with the screws removed or modified.

Using the picture of the dies, get a few long bolts (head removed as needed) or all thread and dimple the working ends. You might be able to use the clamp screws with the pads removed for this.

It looks like the dies have to spin independently from the clamp screw. This makes sense to not mar the rivet.

Sorry the picture from the video is small, you need to click on it to get it to enlarge.

If you were going to build your own, I think I’d start with a C clamp style of valve spring compressor. Lots of open metal to work around, but kinda big overall. Might be easier than trying to put the extended on the fixed end.

Well heck, steak found the edge clamp, looks so much different from my edge clamp, I didn’t know of that style.

The R100 has a very small mouth, and zero gap on the non threaded end. Used my two weekend ago to reset a failing rivet.
