Received junk email from Sears on sales promotions ... followed link .....

Spline design ..... works on rounded crappy fasteners ... the whole reason why I was shopping for 6 point box end. I already had a load of double open ends so I wanted double box to compliment the set. 12 hours ago, I was ready to pull the trigger on 3 pieces of Nepros double box. Now, this, changes my search again. At $20, I'll put aside my set of double open ends. Lets hope the quality of this set is better than the CURRENT chromed raised panels. I just returned a set of raised panel wrench because of loose tolerance. I compared it to my 30 year old raise panel wrench and my old one are definitely tighter.

I already miss those luscious **** Nepros 6 point double box ends. I guess we are not meant to be.

i do like the look of them, but it just seems like i remember seeing somthing very much like that a few years ago. not with the spline, but with that look. my issue would be. why stop at 11/16 and no 3/4? i see they also skip a metric size. that is just plain stupid.

The metric set, 10-17mm skipped only 16mm. I suppose a 19mm would make a more complete set. I have yet to use a 16 or 18mm so I won't miss them.

may be no big loss on metric,bu t7/16, 1/2, 9/16 and 3/4 is bread and butter in standard. i also use the other sizes but those are 90% of the smaller. above that is 15/16 and 1 1/8. i just hate sets that skip sizes. wait, if it is missing a size it is not a set.

18mm is common on Mopar stuff too. In fact I use 18mm wrenches more than 19mm.

There are none in stock in my area either. they must be new. However, are they really raised panel or is the middle section buffed like the ends of the wrench? I'm guessing Danaher as the oem. However, not knowing the country of origin makes it hard to effectively guess. I bet they'll be this year's Christmas tool book.

Has anyone seen the new dogbone wrench? Its on the same page as these black raised panels. Seems like craftsman has got some new tools coming out.

wrenches look interesting, metric dog bone is on my shopping list for sure! That would be perfect for any kind of "emergency vehicle repair kit."

I kinda do like the way they look also. If I had a set of Cmans with a crappy finish from rust or whatever I would be tempted to hit them with some satin black paint.

I will be the lone dissenting voice. I do not like the way they look, I predict the combo wrenches and the dog bone are both made across the pond. In fact, I will keep my old Craftsman flatpanel wrenches everyone hates. I think they will prove better quality than these! Yup, that's me...........stuck in a rut! I would love to be wrong, but since Sears is now selling Chinese tap/die sets, I now view every new thing they roll out with a whole new level of suspicion! Plus, at that price point I do not see how they could be anything but import!

To me the wrenches have a kind of vintage feel to them. almost as if you hired someone from the 50's to design a "futuristic" wrench. I dig the design, I don't like that they skipped a size in metric though.

UB I'm looking at these as the one time in a million it might come in handy type of tool.

With that use in mind 20 dollars for something that might save me a days wait or an hours drive in each direction is cheap insurance.

Would I use them all the time? Most likely not, my Macs, Cornwells, Protos, Snap-ons and Wrights would get sad if I did. Not to mention the Easco's and SK's.

I have no expectation that these wrenches will be of better quality than the old raised panels. However, this may be the case where the design, spline, makes up for the poor material and finish with better performance. After all, we ARE trying to tighten up or remove a fastener. If the spline design lives up to it's claim of working on half rounded nuts, I am happy. As long as they don't snap in half when I pull on it, for $20, I'll live with the crappy finish.

They look new to me. Never seen anything like this from Cman before.

The finish is likely a black oxide finish. Not sure who would make them.

All I know is that I was at Sears yesterday looking at tools. Had not been there in about a year. There are certain tool that they used to have that were still made in USA a year ago and now made in China today. Even some of rare German made Craftsman stuff is now China (pitch gauges). Everyone rips the USA Dahaner made stuff now, but truth be told I predict that by 2020 nearly every Craftsman tool will be made in China or Taiwan. We'll all be looking back on these days with better sentiments, at least most of the wrenches, sockets, ratchets, screwdrivers, snips, and pliers are still made here in the USA for now. Certain aspects of the Craftsman quality may not be what it once was, but that's also true of all other professional grade tool makers. For the most part, most of the USA tools are still useable and pretty good quality.

What do you guys think the description means?

"The 6 different types of fasteners should be in the following order: ......."

I suspect many of the descriptions in Sears tools catalog, and many other tool catalogs, are not written by people with knowledge of tools. Often, there is no indication if it is a 1/4" or 3/8" drive, 6pt or 12 pt, etc. If they take the words "in" & "order" out of that sentence, it make sense.

I went back to check availability ..... IT IS AVAILABLE !

Placed the order. Waiting for the confirm email to pick up at the local Sears store. Let's hope it is for real. Sears web site order has been funky at best.

The set is names "6 piece Universal Wrench Set" 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17mm, with a BONUS 15mm to make it a total 7 pieces. Now why can't they just call it 7 pieces set? The BONUS part is in small fine print in the description. Many people would have missed it. Calling it a 7 pcs set would make more sense from a marketing point of view. Well, what do you expect from Sears .....

They had them at my sears store. They didn't seem to bad. I thought about picking them up but some how my girlfriend talked me into taking her out to dinner instead.

They had that dog bone too.

The wrenches i thought said made in the USA on them but i could be wrong

Ya I went to Sears today looking for these and they weren't on the shelf yet, but the guy I always deal with there was nice enough to get an SAE and Metric set out of the back room for me.

Sharp edges, Made in China. I profusely apologized and thanked him for finding them for me but left without them and of course let him know why, saying something about voting with my dollar.

16mm is missing from the metric set but if you get the SAE set you get 5/8..... I've never seen a 5/8 or 16mm fastener head that 5/8 and 16mm wrenches wasn't interchangeable.

On a side note, while I was there I picked up a Craftsman remote hose clamp pliers, the kind that Matco and Snap-on sell Taiwan made for $70, the Craftsman version was from France (unusual) and only $39.

why have a splie on one end and an open on the other end?
spline will work on spline, 12pt and 6 pt but I have never likes how they fit on the 6 pts

I would rather have them as a double box

Same here. I was originally shopping for a 3 pcs double box. Already have loads of open end wrenches.

If the spline live up to its claim of working on half rounded nuts, I am happy. The spline is the insurance policy against that sinking feeling in the stomach when a nut rounds off. Sort of Pepto for mechanics.

Makes sense, since I already have standard open ends on my Snap-on OEX and OEXL wrenches and Flank-drive Plus open ends on my Snap-on ratcheting wrenches... another set of combination wrenches is just a waste of precious toolbox real estate.

Darn. I had been watching this thread and hoping, as they looked like they might be useful in a pinch, but I can't bring myself to buy Chinese-made c-man hand tools. Not trying to say something about the quality of imported tools, as I know there are some quality brands out there, but imported c-man hand tools? Not ready to cross that bridge yet. :(

I bought a set of these last week. They feel thick and a bit heavy for what it is. The oxide finish looks and feels like rattle can barbaque paint, but that may just be me...

When you open the wrench organizer cover and fplip the wrench over you find a great big "C H I N A" on it. That irked me a bit at first but for 20 bucks, what the hell, it's a must have for the toolbox, for that "one in a million" day saver.

open end, so you can double wrench. I hate double box ends...

Also the new dog bone wrench is made in china as well. Guess this is where Craftsman starts making hand tools in china. Very sad. Time to start buying up the made in USA stuff, as it will be hard to find one day!

They make no bones about it, China's stamped on the reverse raised panel where USA is on other C-man wrenches. They feel heavier/bulkier than standard issue, the open end looks to be stronger, less prone to stretch and they are "Guaranteed for Life" unlike other C-man made in China stuff. Are they a rip-off, even for $20? I'll let you know in a couple weeks when I pull in my SB Chevy for the winter.
