Hey all, I'm thinking about buying the craftsman pro prybars on sale with the craftsman club this month. I need a long one to pull a Pontiac transport engine into service position (it's the 3800 engine). Will the 3-piece set that's on sale provide a long enough bar (longest is 25 inches) to do the job? Or should I buy a longer bar? Or something longer than that even?

Thanks, Chris

Not sure about the Proffesional series, but i own the regular Craftsman Hard handle set that i picked up for like 20 bucks on sale and i really like them. I think the longest one is only 25" though.

I've been able to set up to 5 liter V8's to their motor mounts with my SK 24" prybar. I don't work with front wheel drive transverse engines, so I can't say if you need something longer.

I have a set, their definately nice for the $$, if its going to be long enough or not im not sure. They do sell longer ones with the regular handles at sears as well that arent too expensive.

Either Craftsman prybar set if purchased at half off, is a good deal. If you tend to beat on the prybar handle, get the pro versions. They can take the pounding better.

What do you mean about moving the engine into the service position? Are you talking about removing the upper mounts and moving the engine forward? If so, place the vehicle in neutral and no pry bar is necessary.

Craftsman bars have served our restoration projects, currently 73 Chevy El Camino, very well. Enough support for most every thing we have had to do to date, including one motor mount issue. Go for it.

I'll jump on board with more praise. I have the regular 3-bar set and they have been very good. I do hammer on the ends and haven't broken a handle yet. I did buy two Snap-on straight blade striking prybars (12" and 24") since I was finding myself in situations where the curved end would not work.

I may add the C-man 36" bar to my collection, just because. Maybe go with that one?

Thanks for all the replies. Fedwrench, that's what I'm talking about. The front mount is a dogbone, and a guy I know who restores cars told me to take it off, pull the engine forward with a pry bar (i guess bracing it against the rear of the engine bay?), and then put it back on in a lower position. He said that's how to get the engine into the service position to replace the rear plugs and wires. Delray, I looked at that set, and to buy the other two bars individually later would only cost me 5 dollars more than buying the whole set now, because of the sale on the 3-piece.

The gooseneck bars look pretty promising, especially at 10 dollars. Maybe I'll just buy one of those, pry bars aren't something I find myself needing very often, but I'm sure if I buy them, I'll find tons of uses not imagined before. I was thinking about just buying the 36" one, it's only 25 dollars, and I'm fairly certain it would do the trick. I was just worried about the 25 inch one not having enough length to do the job, but the engine is like 3 inches from the firewall, so it probably would.

One of my other buddies told me that I could just use a piece of steel pipe. You guys think that's acceptable, or would I risk breaking something with an object that thick (i could get the 1.5" dia pipes at HD)?
