Cabinet Choices ???

Hello and thank you everyone for a great site with lots of useful information. I am new to this site and it has helped me with ideas for my garage.

I am currently remodeling my garage. It is a 24 x 20 attached, two car garage. I will be using the garage mainly for carpentry work, but also to work on the vehicle.

I was going to build the cabinets myself but I am now considering buying some metal cabinets. I am looking for the best value, not necessarily the cheapest, but the best compromise between cost and quality.

I've done a lot of researching and here is the best value I have found so far: (These seem to be the same as Lowe's Promaxx cabinets)

I called the company and they offered discounted pricing from what is on their website.

Tall Storage Cabinet: $175.50
30" Wall Cabinet: $125.10
30" Mobile Base: $177.30
30 Drawer Base: $222.30
Work Bench: $128.70

Shipping worked out to average around $40.00 a cabinet.

I have seen others out there that look nicer. Such as these:

And these:

I do not want to go with MDF or particle board cabinet. I live in Florida and the humidity would ruin the cabinets quickly.

So, I am looking for suggestions, ideas, and any input anybody can offer related to garage cabinets. Any other options?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Mike

Suggestions? Do you plan on keeping them forever? What is the warranty on the different cabinets? What will fit your space and your design? What is the drawer weight capacity? Shelf wight capacity? How do they secure to the wall? Locking casters? I could go on and on...

I think the most important question is, how much are you willing to spend?

Baldhead and Moduline you posted are considerably more expensive, but they are also significantly higher quality.

The ones in the first photo look pretty flimsy. It is evident from the photo that the drawers do not fit well.

Thanks for the replies; here is some more information.

We will be selling the house in 5-6 years, so I would like them to last that long and still look good for potential buyers. They do not need to last a lifetime.

I could not find a warranty listed for the cabinets I posted, but if I order them from Lowes I could return them within a year.

Each mobile base cabinet is rated for 800lbs and have two locking casters.. The drawers are ball-bearing. The workbench top is rated for 4000lbs; it is described as an "epoxy sealed shop top".

I'm not sure how they recommend attaching the cabinets to the wall, but I would be bolting them through the drywall directly into the concrete block.

These cabinets would run me around $2,500.00. I have a straight 18' run along one wall where they will be installed. That price is for (1) tall cabinet, (3) mobile drawer bases, (3) mobile cabinet bases, (2) workbenches, and (4) 30" wall cabinets. To be honest, $2,500.00 is probably more than I want to spend on these. $2,500.00 for a better quality and better looking cabinet I would consider.

I can probably build the cabinets for $500.00, but don't really have the time or desire to do so. I like the metal cabinets better because of durability and looks, but if I build them they would be made out of wood and painted.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help,

Mike

Moduline and Baldhead are $5-10k for what you are looking for, so those should not be considered in your options.

Sears carries a line from geneva that I think would be better suited for you. Slightly more expensive, but they are built better than the ones form Lowes.

The Genevas are very nice for the price. Griots sells them as well, but I think the Sears prices are better. However, I think Sears has trouble keeping them in stock. People also seem to like the Craftsman Professional series. I am debating between the Genevas and The C-man Pros myself. Probably leaning toward the Genevas.

Thanks for the replies, fellas.

I decided that I will just build some cabinets to suit my needs. The metal cabinets are very nice but I can't justify spending $2,500.00 or more for a cheap, flimsy cabinet set. The other companies that you guys suggested I look into would be even more.

On a side note: I'm waiting for the plastic floor samples from Greg Smith and Floor Junkies. I recieved the rubber floor tile samples from Greg Smith the other day and will probably end up going with those, but I figured I would at least take a look at the plastic ones (they are about $400.00 cheaper than the rubber tiles). Any quick thoughts on the flooring?

Thanks,

Mike

If you are planning to flip the place, let the future owner decide what should go in the space.

X2

More times than I'd want to count I've seen people do work to a place to sell it and the first thing the new owners do is rip that right out to redo it... Most painful one was a $14K kitchen the previous owners were convinced by the Realtor they "had to" do in order to sell the place.

Granted the houses sold for about the asking price... But it is just a shame to see the waste of labor and materials....

The time and money you put into doing things "above and beyond" in order to flip a place is often better spent just lowering the price you are asking. Fix it up enough that people want to buy it, but not much more...

I mean if you're going to finish the garage and want to get "the look" and help to sell it while all the while making it habitable by you in the meantime...do it. But take the stuff with you when you leave or work it into a deal. It's kind of like seeing those sample homes with all the fancy furniture and fully decorated - it makes you want to buy the house... same thing with this.

If the owner is a car guy, he'll go for a couple grand added on the price of a $x00k house.
