Cabinet Colors

Greetings,

Here is a picture of my workbench and cabinets so far. A lot smaller than most on here, but I think it will meet my needs for now. The question that I have is, what color do you think I should paint the cabinets? A friend said I should use linseed oil or tung oil, what do you think?

Thanks In Advance,

Gary

Tung oil will take a lot of coats....at least 2-3 and requires a day of drying in between....but makes for a nice finish....

If it was me....I would wipe them down with a Watco oil stain (the oil stain is good at protecting the wood)....let them dry for a few days and then follow up with a good water based clear coat.

Do not paint.....it will actually make it harder to maintain them.

When you have real wood cabinets it is a crime to paint over the wood. All you need now is two coats of varnish, or if you prefer a different shade in the wood, stain it first. Varnish would be no more work than paint, and the real wood look beats any color paint made.

Thanks for the comments. I think I will do some kind of stain or oil. I like the Chevy emblem. Where did you get them or how did you make them?

Thanks again,
Gary

The Chevy emblems are just auto pinstripe stuck to the wood in the desired shape and varnished over to make it last.

I do agree that real wood need to show through and wood is beautiful. Maybe do a light stain like a white wash maybe?????

In a garage you want it as bright as possible dark cabinets look dated IMHO

I love how well ever thing fits together though, great job.

Also love the chevy emblems too

I host my pictures myself on my server in my house. Then I simply add the code to link them to this page. This code OMITTING all the spaces should work.

I don't have a picture at the moment, but I used a light colored stain/poly combo on the cabinet frames (oak maybe??) and then painted the doors a nice satin red color (tried to match somewhere in between the craftsman and HF toolbox). I think it looks nice and like the contrast.

I refinished an old teacher's desk with 2 different colors of stain/varnish. One was a natural/clear finish, the other was a "cherry" color. This is the only pic I have online:

People find it hard to imagine that this desk sat in some guy's backyard for 2+ years and survived the flood of 1997 in Fort Collins, CO.

I really like to see the pictures if you could post one/some.

Do you have any close-up pictures of the desk? It looks good from this picture. What did you put on it?

Thanks,
Gary

Minwax has a floor poly that is very durable. I used it on an indoor wheelchair ramp and it's holding up great so far. Much better then regular poly.
About 35ish a gallon at Menards

Boiled linseed oil is good too, but it will seep when warm and it will darken the wood. It does smell good though. I like it for outdoor stuff & gunstocks.

I like looking at wood myself, however if the cabinats dont match painting works. My Grandmother painted her kitchen cabinats white after I put them up, there about three differnt woods and she wanted them to match.

I'll see if I can get a picture in the next couple of days. I don't remember what I used, I was a poor college student back then so I probably bought whatever was cheap/plentiful like some Minwax or something.
