I'm looking for cool cabinet handles for my garage...on the cheap of course. I'm using old kitchen cabinets for storage. Any ideas of cool handles I can make? I might just buy some if I don't come up with anything.

I used golf balls. Just drilled a small hole through the door and part way into the golf ball, then ran a drywall screw into the golf ball from behind.

I did the same. Of course I did work at a course for a while as lead mechanic, so I did have an abundant supply of free ones!

I saw this on a TV show....go to Harbor Freight and buy some cheap open end wrenches and weld some nuts on them, or drill holes through them, place a spacer behind and a bolt through them. Very cheap, very cool.

American V-twin point covers work well. A buddy of mine worked for a local motorcycle mfg. co. and they would change out the S&S logo'd points cover with thier cover and pitch the S&S's. Insted of tossing them he gave me a bunch, I added some screws, spacers and nuts and made handles. I'll try to post a pic later.

I used a rope. Simple and very effective.

I also have a cub scout den so every door has a different knot.

In my basement, I bought a set of mini pool (billiard) balls on Ebay and used them...of course I had a pool table in that area so it made sense.

I made a set of cabinets for the nephew for his business and made the handles to represent pistons. but I am a machinist so making them was no big deal. He keeps telling everyone they are pistons out of a RC airplane. Everyone thinks they are pretty cool.

I'm in the same boat. Kitchen cabinets, want new handles and hinges. If you look them up on ebay, there are thousands...I always liked the old wrench idea too.

I welded up some for a guy. He used wrenches and sockets as stand offs. Welded a 1/4-20 nut inside each socket.

Cool idea. Hit the local HF or the local bargain bin. Get some small sockets and cheap igniition wrenches. Add one or two small sockets to each wrench....I like that!!!

Guys, if you look at the link I posted you can buy the wrench handle already made for like $7. Don't know about you, but my time is valuable and if I can buy it already made for not much more than it would cost to make, that's what I do.

I go with Vicegrip & Kevin54 on this one. This is one of the best uses for HF tools if there ever was one !

Coolest ones I've seen were made from old aluminum connecting rod caps. :D
Of course this was in a race engine shop.

I have access to a CNC lathe. We're making red anodized miniature pistons with studs integral to them.

This thread needs more pics!

A house I looked at to buy had sparkplugs for handles. They were sticking directly out of the cabinets so I didn't like them but other ideas could be used.

I'll have a bunch of cam caps left over once I get the replacement cylinder head in, so I think I may use those. I'm still wondering about how i can use the valves for something around the shop.

Um, I can't tie many knots, and of the few I know, one would be a hangman's noose, and I'd probably end up using it out of frustration...

Some good ideas here. What I think I'm going to do is get some bullet lug nuts, and bolt them to the doors. Also, we replaced our house windows recently, and have some silver handles from the old ones, those will go on the drawers. We'll see how it turns out. If I do it, and like it, I'll post pics.

I was thinking of buying aluminum L channel cut to size of the tops or sides attaching with srews or two sided body tape you could bruch or polish them to look like a tool box.

Gosh, lots of ideas here. Some sound like they would be easy to build, others sound like they would be classy. So I will tell you what i have and why.NONE!!!! I chose cabinets for the feature of being laid out where I don't need them.I can easily open the door with out a pull.I use a machinists apron in the garage some and I also tend to unbutton my outer shirt if it's hot and I'm not doing anything but hanging out or cleaning. However even when all buttoned up I have hung a pocket on a drawer pull.I have also hung up air hoses, extension cords, and other things on them.Although I agree that some give the cabinets lots of style I use my area enough that I thought it was a good safety choice.

The safety issue is a good one, however, the wrenches could still be use.

Just cut a pocket in the face of the door, and mount the wrenches flush with the door face. I think that would still get the look and not have any snag points for clothing, air line, or cords.

Or bend the ends over...nothing a torch and a little heat can't fix.

It's funny you mention catching things on them though. I don't have a problem with cabinet handles, but there are one or two items in my garage that, like George Bailey and his loose stair finial, I almost ALWAYS snag my clothes on when working in the shop, even though I know they are there. Part of the "charm" of working in a confined space, I guess! :bounce:

very good ideas, many I had thought of and a number I have not.

I dont like things sticking out so all of mine have a back cut on the edge that acts as the finger pull

on another note. someone mentioned the use for old valves. a friend had a large valve out of a ship or earth mover that was large enough that he used it as the pedestal base for a bench grinder.
I always liked it so much that he later gave me an old valve that was about 12 in long.
