Cabinet mounting question - screws

It looks like a lot of people use the Tapcon screws for the cabinets. But I have also read and experienced that they might loosen up in the concrete wall. What do you guys suggest for mounting my newage cabinets?

What about the option of using a Hilti? Seems easy enough, if they rent them at HD.

Also, should I put a 1x4 piece of wood under the cabinets to help support them or is that over kill if mounted correctly?

My tall cabinets I also want to attach to the wall, but that might be over kill? I don’t want to worry about them flipping over or becoming unstable for whatever reason.

Any suggestions? Tapcons, Hilti, or ?

I suggest you search on and become familiar with the French cleat system.

To attach the back cleat use fasteners with great pull out resistance. If your back wall is truly solid concrete, then any bolt that can be made flush with the back cleat surface should work. Consider lead or nylon anchors, tapcons, expanding anchors, and the like according to what is readily available and dependent on what size hole you can drill in the concrete. For garage cabinets, leave a substantial safety margin.

If your wall is concrete block, as many in Florida are, then one needs a hollow wall set for the lead anchors. Nylon anchors could be used but you will need more of these to spread out the load, but these are easy to install. For concrete block walls I suggest you avoid the expanding anchors that are set with a hammer to drive them in, as concrete block tends not to be that strong when stressed on the side like that.

Small holes in block or solid concrete can be drilled with a masonry bit and a drill and some patience. I suggest you avoid things like a star drill powered by a small mall as the holes can be over sized or wander off course if one is not careful. But, they could be used. Smaller rotary hammers can help drilling into solid concrete and may be all you need. You might be able to borrow one or rent one. I have not seen my HD rent tools.

Plus one on anchoring the taller cabinets. I did in my shop. I used a wire from the cabinet to the wall on the outside of the cabinet. I wanted to be able to see if a cabinet was leaning away from the wall.

Also, should I put a 1x4 piece of wood under the cabinets to help support them or is that over kill if mounted correctly? That works great to support them while your installing the upper cabinets. Once they are hung take the 1X4 down, you won't need it.

My tall cabinets I also want to attach to the wall, but that might be over kill? I don’t want to worry about them flipping over or becoming unstable for whatever reason. We're living in Napa, California right now and Home Depot is pushing every earthquake proof item they sell. If you screw in some plumbing strap to the tops of the cabinets and then into the walls that should do.

Any suggestions? Tapcons, Hilti, or ?

Thanks guys. It looks like i am going to have to go the french cleate route since i realized there are two pipes going up the wall behind the cabinets. If not i am going to have one cabinet sticking further out more than the rest.
