Cabinet mounting questions

I have some of the Home Depot base cabinets l will be mounting in my shop and making workbenches out of them. I have been staining and finishing them and getting them ready to set in place. Should I cut and remove the base boards so the cabinets are flush against the wall, or put a spacer between the wall and the top of the cabinet so everything squares up? I was going use the spacer, but cutting the base board seems like it might be better.

I do have one. I just have to find it. I will be so glad when I get all this done and have everything organized.

I'd cut baseboards too. How level is your floor? May need to shim cabinets to keep tops square and level for benchtop. Be sure to bring everything up to high point if the floor isn't level.

Pull the baseboards off the wall, mount the cabinets, then cut the baseboards to fit & reinstall. Use a good chop saw.

Pull the baseboards off the wall, mount the cabinets, then cut the baseboards to fit & reinstall. Use a good chop saw.

I would also recommend doing it this way if you can remove the baseboards easily and not cause any damage to the wall by pulling them off.

If you remove the baseboards, then you can position your new cabinets and move them around to exactly where you want them, and then put the baseboards back on. By doing it this way, if you decide that you want to move the cabinets an inch this way or a foot that way, you can do all of that before you put the baseboards back on, and only have to cut them once.

If you leave them installed, and you cut them, put the cabinets in place, and then decide that you want them a foot over that way, well, then you will have to take them off anyway because now they will be cut in the wrong places.

Remove the baseboards, put in your cabinets, live with their placement for a few days, and see if that is where you want them. Once you live with the cabinets in place for awhile, and like where they are, put the baseboards back up around the cabinets.

It will probably be this weekend before it can take care of the base boards. I will have one set of cabinets finished so I can go ahead and get them mounted in while I am at it. Thanks everyone.

If your baseboards are less height than the cabinet front toe kick, you may be able to notch the rear of the cabinet sides to fit over the baseboards. That way, no removal or cutting of baseboards and you can move your cabinets anywhere you want along the wall in the future.
