Cabinet resto-mod build

I started a 7 drawer melamine cabinet resto-mod project last weekend. I tried to start a new thread over the weekend but the site wouldn't let me. For whatever reason I am now able to. So here goes........

The Build
The build consists of rebuilding an existing melamine cabinet that had 2 drawers on top and double doors on the bottom and converting to a 7 drawer cabinet. I basically gutted the cabinet and I am just using the box shell. I am going to trim out the face and sides of cabinet with pre finished oak that I have left over from another job I did. The drawers will be made from oak sides and 3/4" birch prefinished plywood bottom. The counter top will be made of bamboo T&G flooring wrapped in oak trim.

Paint
I plan on painting the new MDF drawer faces the same red as my corvette and add a white vertical stripe. I think I'm going to paint the oak trim a white also but concerned about the grain. It would take a lot of work to get the oak grain to disappear. I might just paint it and see how it looks. There will be vertical and horizontal oak trim on the sides that will paint white and the in-between area to go the red color.

Cabinet Feet
I have decided to use heavy duty adjustable stainless steel feet instead of roller casters because of un level garage floor where I plan on putting the cabinet. I hope this was the right choice since the cabinet will be freeking heavy when I'm done. I had built a wood roll around from an old kitchen cabinet about 10 years ago and always had issues with the drawers opening when they faced downhill.

The drawer slides will be full extension soft close 200lb slides. Possible overkill but I don't like wimpy and these will be anything but that.

Ok here is some pictures of my build. Unfortunatly the pictures of what the cabinet looked like before starting rebuild are on my other camera. I will post those at another time....... So there are lots of views yesterday but no comments?


This picture is after the oak trim and all the slides installed. One mistake I made was to have the face trim extend into cabinet opening. The reason I did this was to align the trim on the outside with a piece of oak at side edge.
This caused me to have to pad out the inside for slides to clear the trim. There is one missing slide at top drawer as one set of slides was backordered. Note the red washing machine to the right of cabinet. That is very similar red that I will be painting the cabinet drawers and sides.

Ok so here is an update. All the drawers and handles are installed. I am missing one handle as I was only going to do 6 drawers when I ordered the handles. I still need to finish the bamboo top but ran out of time.

I got some Fastcap Kaizen from Amazon last week for $8 a sheet. I only got 3 2'x4' pieces to see if I liked it. I do like it and got online to order more and it is now $21. each. I thought WTF!! But did order more. Here are a few examples of what I have done so far.

Thanks!! Inside dimensions of each drawer is 32-3/4" wide by 21-1/2" deep.

Those of us that still use "Robo Grips" have to stick together. I keep those rubber ends on the tooth part of the pliers... I use them all the time. Saw the pair in your drawer and smiled. I actually have 4... 2 small ... 2 large ... With the rubber ends they really come in handy when you are not wanting to mess something up with scratches... and they Grip like a Robo.

That is hella funny!! I don't have the rubber ends your speaking of. I wonder if anyone else has these lol.

I have those same Robo Grips and the plastic covers. Can't say that I've ever preferred to grab them vs the Channel locks that live in the same drawer. Also have the Craftsman Auto Locks from the same era and don't use them either.

I agree with you... My channel locks are my go tool tool for that type of work. Funny thing is when I was organizing the drawer last night I couldn't find my large channel locks. I ended up putting the 2 robot grips in the drawer instead. As luck would have it I found the large Chanel locks this morning. Now I have to get more kaizen foam or just put the large channel locks on top.
