Cabinet Score on Craigslist

At the suggestion of many of you, I was looking on Craigslist for some good Cabinets that I might be able to use for the garage. I was considering buying a few good base units ( I was trying to figure how to justify to the wife Lista for at least the bottoms) and then fill in with cabinets found on craigslist for the top. I needed between 10' and 12' to fill up. I found a lot of ****, and some nice pre-owned kitchen cabs. I searched back almost 2 months and found a high end kitchen showroom in the area who was selling off their display unit of a very high end collection that typically sold in NYC.

The display had 10 linear feet, 96" tall, Stainless Steel Tops (yet the sink hole was already cut but the opening fits the Lista SS top I have). The doors are high gloss Cherry, with solid wood boxes. The hinges, slides, and drawers are very high end. There is also 3 SS & Glass horizontal cabinets above the work area (good for books and shop manuals) that are pre drilled for Puck Lights to light up the counter. While I would have loved Red Doors, this has kind of High School Lab feel...just missing the Bunsen Burner.

The only real change will be to remove the doors under the sink area for feet when sitting on a stool, and put a SS back splash on.

The showrooms new display won't be in for 4-8 weeks so no rush in me taking it (I still need to complete the paint and floor),yet it is paid for with a contract, and they said they would even disassemble and deliver. BTW they also threw in this high end SS 30" sink.

What would you have paid for them? or would you have passed?

How well suited will those cabinets be for tools and car parts?

Are you planning on beefing up the shelf supports at all?

Looks like you got a good deal, but I would have chosen steel cabinets personally.

I found some great auction based surplus website/company that sells government/military surplus steel cabinets, lots of Lista's and whatnot, fraction of the price.

I personally think they look fantastic! I wouldn't have the $$$ flow, but I would think up to $2000 would be appropriate.

I was a bit concerned regarding the strength, but the boxes are built very well. All of the drawer bottoms are either SS lined, with heavy metal slides or full hardwood joints.

My biggest problem is lack of general storage due to a very small basement 20*15 so this is for all of my project stuff, small tools and tools in cases, oil, brake pads etc. I do not plan on having real heavy parts inside. The 41" full size tool chest will hold all of the true tools.
The upper cabs I may put some sort of reinforcement, as I may store some larger items on top of them due to the high ceiling.

Junk is pretty much dead on, esp with the disassembly and delivery included. When I get them I will post some more detailed pictures.

I got the cabinets delivered last week when I completed the floor. I installed them over the weekend, except for the main SS top, as it is a bit too heavy for just me to lift.

I know some of you had mentioned the strength. I am throughly impressed. The entire box is 1/2" 100% cabinet grade plywood. Everything is mitered, glued and screwed.. All of the slides are heavy duty self closing units from Germany, and the drawers are stainless steel sides and partial bottoms with the rest plywood. I do think these are too nice for a garage, and almost wish they were red (which they can be sprayed if I really needed to), however they fit well in the garage, will give me 7 ft of SS work top, and well made. A few of the drawers are set for hanging files nicely, and the glass door units will be good for books and shop manuals. I will also have over 3ft above the top cabinets for more storage.
Need to put under cabinet lights in also.
BTW the garage lights and outlets are not in yet, so the one light strip on top of the unit is just to help me get some light.

(Yes the drawers on the left just hit the lift post, so the lift will be moved 2" further away to clear)

They wanted $2,500, I got them for $1,800 with breakdown at their shop and delivery, plus the Kindred 30" SS sink (retail $700). So I will try to sell the sink and the original 90" SS top with the 30" hole already cut, and get a few $$. So overall not too bad.

Nice score, those look awesome. I would keep them the wood tone. The rest of your garage appears to be pretty clean those cabinets really set it off. And raise the standard for your garage buddies.
