Cabinet SCORE

Well last night was a loooooong night. Got a call from one of the brothers who had purchased the Home Ec "room" out of the High School in the town we grew up in. They are tearing the old school down and auctioned off much of the internals to raise money.

We started at 6pm and I got home at 3am, all cabinets removed and hauled off. The room was esentially 4 kitchens with base cabinets & wall cabinets complete less the appliances.

The kitchens were installed in the 1950's and are made of poplar and birch, dove tail corners in all the drawers etc. etc. VERY WELL MADE

I scored (as it is all I need) a set of base cabinets & wall cabinets for a sink area 84" long with the counter and sink. Then a 7' tal x 8' wide cabinet that has four doors, coat hanging area, shelves, & 6 large drawers. Going to go in the attached garage when I get it built for a landing spot for coats, shoes, etc.

When my father shows up to help me unload them I'll take a few pictures and add. Right now they are in the back of my truck still, wishing I had a magic wond as this stuff is heavy.

Did I mention it was on the second floor?

OH and Everything cost a WHOPPING $10 at the auction.

Sounds like an excellent score! That older institutional furniture was extremely well made. No reason it shouldn't continue to give years of service. Not only that but it's origin has some sentimental value as well. Nice job!!

Sink Cabinets

Three drawers made it to my brothers instead of my place. This also had a return cabinets on the right side so end panel needs trimmed and moved in to finish the cabinet off.


Large Cabinet 7' tall x 8' wide, center set of doors has a clothes bar in it, left and right single doors have 5 adjustable shelves, six drawers an the bottom.

Sorry for the pics but in my little single car garage I have enough for my shop and two car that neither exist.

Also I didn't mention received two double paper towel dispensers in the deal.

Well I would say that score deserves a YOU **** almost as good as my free geneva metal kitchen cabinet score . I still have cabinets to paint and I have had them 2 years LOL.

rickairmedic -- I will not show you a picture of the metal kitchen cabinets I scored 8 years ago for the price of $0 that are already in my small garage.
12 foot of base cabinets and wall cabinets. And I've got you beat those have not been painted yet either, whats the rush my garage is not built yet.

Well the next time I'm at my two brothers I'll snap a picture of what they scored. My load, was the smallest of them all, if I had to guess we removed 150' of base cabinets and wall cabinets last night.

Old used GOOD cabinets are always a great deal for the shop. They can sometimes be picked up from garage sales and other demolition sites. Schools are great sites. Talking to the guys removing the cabinets always helps. They will usually take a little more care pulling them out rather than just busting them loose.

I picked up a bunch of HD H$ metal cabinets both base and wall from a hospital lab. Over 50 lineal feet of each free for hauling away. A couple of the under sink units have a tiny amount of surface rust inside but nothing a little wire brushing and POR-15 won't cure. Other than that they are spotless, just needing a little paint of my choice. The wall units contain both cabinets and a few shelf units. The base units are a mixture of cabinets and drawer units. The drawers all have HD ball slides. I got some of that black lab-type countertop also.

Good score! I was a Maintenance supervisor for a school district. It was amazing what our department threw away. Once I came on board I stopped the practice as much as I could. I convinced the purchasing department to sell the equipment to the public, which meant posting dates and times in newspapers.

I also purchased wood and metal shop equipment from the district at very reasonable prices. It was done legally through open purchases. I had to avoid conflicts and some of the equipment I paid a little more than I wanted too because of the process, but I ended up with some very nice woodworking tools when we closed the junior high wood shop.

They used to just pick this stuff up with a fork lift and dump it in the 40 yard dumpster! I watched perfectly good auto shop equipment rust away because no one wanted to deal with the hassles of an auction!

I scored big on the five foot square maple work benches that they were throwing away, I let 13 of them go to the dumps (I still kick myself) These were used in both the wood shop and the metal shops to build projects on. They had small project lockers underneath them. They make great work benches for home shops, they cut in half very easily.

The cabinets you have are Furniture Grade and have a stamp on them, this was required when we purchased them in the 50's and 60's. They are well constructed and some of the nicest wood you will ever see. Great score!

A lot of companies and public enterprises like schools even destroy their surplus not because of the hassle of selling it but because of liability concerns.
