Cabinet Systems

I am starting from scratch in my garage. What is your opinion on purchasing modular garage cabinet systems versus building out cabinet and storage solutions from scratch? What cabinet solutions providers are your favorite and why?

A lot depends on what you are doing in your garage as a wood worker would want different things from some one working on cars.

I ask these things to the people I build kitchen cabinets for. What do you want to store, how big is in and how do you want to access it (drawer or door). Working with those answers will give you an idea of the type of cabinets you need and where you would like them in your shop. Then find a system that works for you our build one.

This response may not make the planning any easier, but...

The main space is 24' x 20'. The workshop room out back is 10' x 12'.

A big part of the space will be mechanical support for my car hobby. I currently have a Jeep and enjoy wrenching and updating it. Until recently, I had an MGA, and will build another sometime in the not so distant future, I hope. In support of this hobby, part of the shop will be metal working. I have some fundamental metal shop tools, and a welder.

I also design and build audio speakers as a hobby. This entails woodworking and electronics. My woodworking station is centered around a radial arm saw, then the rest are primarily hand tools. I do have and use a router table. The woodworking extends out into wood finishing and painting.

The final space is typical home maintenance... garden tools, leaf blower, edger, lawn mower and so on...

Did I mention that we want to park two cars in the garage too? lol...

I started with previous homeowner installed Melamine Cabinets turned to mush in 3 years. They looked and great right up to when they started to swell. I replaced them with completely refinished Kitchen cabinets that were in great shape. The humidity killed them after several years.
After using those set ups I had a solid plan as to what I wanted. Wood was not part of the plan again.

Large locker style for over size stuff that is too big or my base cabinets
Draw style base for ease of access to item I don't want in the tool chest
Overheads for frequently used stuff, and manuals that don't go int the house

I found exactly what I was looking for with NewAge metal Cabinets. I was planning on the performance plus line in cobalt. Only reason I didn't go with them, got a killer deal for the Pro 3.0 line.

If your garage stays dry enough the wooden cabinets are excellent option. if you have humidity issues look at some of the metal ones
