Cabinetry for my garage

Want to replace the plastic **** i have.

Do not need a bench, just decent quality self standing steel or MDF. Who makes good value ones at variable widths ?

I need one of my cabinets to be no more than 26" wide.

Then i have 102" to fit other cabinets.

Is there somewhere that sells something that's got different widths ? Google isn't coming up with a lot unfortunately.

What about kitchen cabinets that are sold at most big box stores? They come in a variety of sizes, widths, lengths, colors and door options from plain to fancy. You can also find them from time to time for free out on the curb in front of homes that are getting a kitchen upgrade.

My hanging garage cabinets are all old kitchen cabinets that people were throwing out. They work great, have adjustable shelving, and some are deeper and wider than others so I can store big things and small things.

Plus, when put together right, the tops of the cabinets create a nice flat shelf to put even more stuff on!

I used a French cleat system to hang them. This made it an easy one man job, and I can move them around if need be.

A pocket screw jig and a little effort will produce cabinets that are better and cheaper than you are likely to buy. Custom sizes are automatic when you DIY.

There are many options when using wall mounted cabinets in a shop or garage. I've used second hand, store bought and made my own when time permitted, but being a retired cabinetmaker, I prefer shop made over anything else, especially when in a creative mood.
I enjoy knowing my shop made custom cabinets will be of better quality and last longer than anything on the new or used market.

I wish i had the skills to make my own cabinets, but i do not... I have to rely with what they're selling to me, as it seems overpriced for what you're actually getting.

Went into Lowes and Home Depot today, and all they had was junk.

I am looking at the Seville Classics (Sam's Club, Amazon, ...). For my use they seem good especially for the price.

I am not sure how to mount them side by side though without using french cleats (which means that they won't be flush to the wall).

Ask your significant other, which one of her friends is about to do a kitchen remodel. Perhaps you can assist with gently removing the old cabinets without the typical sledgehammer destruction that adds drama and flair to HGTV.

It doesn't take much to build your own cabinets if you have even a modest amount of skill.

Circular Saw, tape measure, and a straight edge. Buy a copy of Tom Clark's book "Practical Shop Cabinets", and you've got what it takes. A Kreg Pocket hole jig makes things easier, but it is not absolutely required.

If you follow Tom's process, it is pretty simple and you can get exactly what you want.

Can also look on Craigslist in their Free section. I've seen cabinets on there people are getting rid of because of home remodeling, and I've also posted about 5 kitchens worth on there also.
They go like hotcakes, so be quick on it !

I got these overhead files for free. Super heavy duty. Painted them safety blue and I think they work great for over a bench.

Build them! You'll end up with whatever size you want. That's what I did and I couldn't be happier.

I just ordered the book with not much of an issue. I did have to click on the email me button to get his email address to enter it into PP but after that it went through without an issue..

Every time I see them smashing stuff, I say to my wife "How stupid. Its far easier to undo a few screws, and carry the complete cabinet out, than smash it to bits." Plus you could repurpose it, or donate. The wanton, needless destruction is one of my pet peeves about those stupid HGTV shows.

Check Craigslist for used kitchen cabinets, or stop into a used building materials place, they have used kitchen cabinets for sale.

I settled for the Craftsman Premium Heavy-Duty Floor Cabinets. 3 of, One wardrobe, one all shelves, and one with two ball bearing drawers, plus one of their lesser 'have to assemble' Craftsmans that's only 32" wide. Got 5% off by taking out one of their cards.. Total $1500. give or take a few bucks. Should have everything delivered to store by Fri !!..

Plus painted my garage white, and will be painting the floor with the Rustoleum, Metallic Silver Bullet Polycuramine coating.

Well i picked up two of my four, Craftsman heavy duty cabinets. One of them looks like its been thrown off a pallet. It's so banged up the bottom drawer doesn't even open.

The other unit, the door doesn't close properly.

Great !

Been on hold with Customer service for 30mins so far. Is it any wonder that the place is going out of business ?

Craftsman makes a heavy duty cabinet? Or do they just list it as heavy duty? Every C-Man cabinet I've seen lately is barely thicker than a beverage can.

Me? Hybrid approach. I got some solid oak doors from the inlaws when my wife remodeled their kitchen...



Then I made my own cabinets out of gray melamine....

Look for a "Habitat ReStore" , or any type of place that re-sells used, dinged, or builder reject building supplies. All of the wall cabinets in my old garage, all of the base, wall cabinets, and doors in my new shop, and the base cabinets and countertops in the garage I picked up cheap from Habitat Restore.

I just take some measurements of the space I need cabinets for, then spend some time there with a tape measure and pick and choose what I need. I've had to do a little modification and painting, but there's tons of doors, drawers, hinges, etc to mix and match.

Sometimes you can find cabinets cheap or free on Craigslist, but you've got to be quick, you're stuck with what they've got, and half the time they want to remove them from the walls for them.
