Cabinets, for better storage and lighting.

Hi, I have a lot of stuff hanging neatly on my garage (22' x 24') walls, garden tools, ladders, shop towels, car cleaners, fishing rods, you name it. My walls and ceiling are painted white and I have six 4' florescent fixtures for light.

My thought is to build cabinets to put all the hanging stuff in and paint the outside white. This will give a much neater appearance and add more reflective surfaces. My question is should I leave the bottom of the cabinets open for air circulation, how about pegboard for doors to increase air circulation? Nothing that creates moisture will be stored, but would it be better to have air circulate in the cabinets or not?

Could you not build sliding panel doors instead? Might be easier then cabinets and would allow for plenty of air circulation.

I am thinking of building the same type of cabinets. I'm thinking 4' wide 6-8' tall with some being 12-18" deep and others deeper. (one side wall of my garage is right up against the door and the other is not)

I definitely want to paint them white like you said. I'm not sure how to frame them up yet.

There are lots of examples of enclosed cabinets on the board -- some home-made, some manufactured. I wouldn't worry about air circulation. I can't imagine many circumstances where that would be an issue.

I'd worry more about keeping dust and critters out of the cabinets than air circulation. If you do pegboard faces on the cabinets they'll just pull the dust right in. I do woodworking though so I'm constantly trying to cover everything.

Yes, maybe I can do without my spider pets! Closed cabinets it is! My plan is to use 3/4" plywood and rip it to size for a 4' wide by 6'-8' high frame. Two 2' wide hinged doors made from 1/8" hardboard (or paneling, like the type with the very smooth and shiny white stuff). I'll route a lip on the plywood so the doors flush mount and not give an edge to catch on.
