I am "remodeling" my garage. I bought a New Age 6 pieces Performance Series. I want to mount the cabinets off the floor. I am not sure how much space should I mount the base cabinet from the floor. Is there a standard/recommendation height/space between the floor and the base cabinets?
Sincerely,
Tyler

Low enough so you don't need a ladder to reach the top shelf. There is a "normal" height for kitchen cabinets but you have to be comfortable in your space. Put one cabinet on the bench, set up on a milk carton or something and test it. Keep goin up until you are happy.

Welcome to the forum.

Mine are 12" off the floor. Just enough to store my jacks and jack stands and high enough to be usable space to neatly store other things. Too much lower and you have unusable space that you can't see and will be a perpetual collector of dirt plus an impossible place to retrieve small dropped parts.

Are these full height cabinets? Or, workbench types?

My base cabinets are 8" off the floor....enough for the floor jack and other stuff like that.

What you really want to control is the height of the work surface....no lower than 36"....but I wouldn't go over 40"....unless your really tall.

Thank you so much for the information. They are base cabinets and full size (72") cabinets. My most important ones are the base cabinets. I don't want them to high for me to "swing my legs" every time I seat on the chair to work.

I never thought of mounting them high enough that I can use the lower space too. I will keep that in mind.

Conclusion. Mount the cabinets as high/low to my comfortable.

I will create a separate build/remodel thread after it's all completed.

Since you mention sitting and swinging you legs, how about setting two of those base cabinets maybe 30 inches apart and then use a long counter top to span the space. Gives you kind of a desk to sit at. I would experiment w/ work bench height. I like mine kind of high. I am 5'9" and like a 40-42 inch bench. Some of this depends on what you are mostly working on at your bench. In my previous garage I used regular kitchen base cabinets and set them on a box built from 2x8s set on edge. I don't like space under cabinets unless it's maybe 15 inches tall. To me it just ends up looking messy. Get the bench height right first. Get a few cardboard boxes and set them on your kitchen counter. Use them to simulate different bench heights. I find I don't spend 30 minutes at a time on a task. So I use the high work bench and high chairs. Think those tall tables w/ stool type chairs that are popular in dining rooms and kitchens. With everything higher than the old standard chair/table dimensions it's a LOT easier getting up/down to get off and on the chair to grab that other tool or part you need that is 5 ft away. BTW, you may end up w/ the regular base cabinets spaced up off the floor while the 72 inchers are on the floor so you can actually reach into the top shelf.

I like my floor cabinets with adequate toe space and have mine sitting on a two by four frame on edge, making it about 3.5" off the floor. The frame is back about six inches from the cabinet front which keeps all the stuff that falls off the bench from rolling too far under the bench when it bounces off your shoes. It's also good when you need to sweep the floor and can easily get your broom or vacuum nozzle under there as well.

normal kitchen cabinet countertop height is 36" that's assuming 1.5" thick tops. upper cabinets are typically 18" above the 36" height, however I have adjust that in my own home and garage. I have a 2.5" counter thickness (old barn wood) and I went to 19" in my kitchen between counter and bottom. So to answer your question, I would mount the bases as high as you can without going over say 40" with the countertop material on. Any higher and I think its too high especially if you are shorter. If you are 6'5" then 40-42 is probably ok for finished top height.
