If I had those narrow sections to do something with, I would measure the depth adjacent to the garage door rails to see if they could be used as heavy duty shelving along the wall. I might try to leave the length alone or cut the length in half to create more 4 foot length shelves for a higher stack of truly stout shelving.

how did the drawer fronts come off? I just looked at mine and they don't appear to come off. just the handles.

I just showed your pictures to my wife and it's a go ahead for repainting in RED.

Are they the same as mine?? Some had another screw at the bottom but the handles are pretty much what is holding these on.

So I am working on the bowling alley lane and need and need some input.

I am working on drilling some big holes in the side to lag some 12" bolts into each end as well as some steel bolted on the back on the middle to keep it from separating. I am going to counter sink the bolts on the side so do you think I should just put on a trim wood piece on it or maybe some steel angle iron bolted on the sides? The steel might give me a good spot to drill into instead of the wood when working on projects. It would also give me a spot to bend metal on etc. it might not look as nice though.

Thanks for doing this mock-up. I was contemplating using the black for the frames, now I think I will go all red.

I was also thinking cream frames and a Lista blue for the doors and drawers.. Ive had my cabinets for about 10 years..Now thanks to this thread I am getting around to cleaning them up and giving a nice paint job. Thanks for the initiative to get these babies polished up.

BTW I got 10 base cabinets when our lab remodeled. I paid $10 each :rocker:

I have only put 5 of them to use in the past 10 years, other 5 are in storage. Wish back then I had the brains to buy more and to get some of the uppers.

The counter tops were all solid, nobody wanted them so my old supervisor brought them home and put them in the barn. I'm going to call him tomorrow and see if he wants to part with any or if he brought any cabinets home also he wants to get rid of.

today I emptied all the tools and stuff out of 2 of the cabinets and started cleaning up the drawers to prep for paint...pictures to follow.

Update.. This wood is like working with concrete with steel mixed in. I decided to use 10"x 1/2" lag bolts on the sides and then lag angle iron in the middle. This way it doesn't spread apart from each other.. This was a total pain in the **** btw!

Now I just need to clean up the edge sand it and clear it but it might be a whole before I can get to that. One more piece too go!

That top is awesome. What is bowling alley floor comprised of? Is it like 2x4's laminated together?

The planks measure 1" x 2 3/4" the wood I have appears to be rock maple. They do toungue and grove on each piece and nail it together. They lag a 2x4 underneath it to keep it from bowing etc.

Here it is!

I think I will just use a flat piece of stainless to finish the front edge...

Exiged.......Are you going to refinish the top before permanently mounting it? A few very long passes with a belt sander would put it back like new.

As far as the front lip, get some stainless angle, or get some aluminum angle and take a router and rout the top edge down, so the angle would set flush on top.

BTW.....I don't think you answered my question from way back, but how wide did you get the top cut at, as far as benchtop depth?

And just to say it again, you have made the benches and overhead cabinets look fantastic. Worth way more than you have in them.:thumbup:

Whats stoping you from plugging those holes on the front with some wood and planning the edge of the counter top with a hand held electric planer. I like the wood look on the front. Kev had a good suggestion with the metal angle.

Just think what that wall of cabinets would have cost if you had to pay full retail for new cabinets and a butcher block top! When it's all done to your liking, add up your final cost and make us all turn green with envy. lol

Looks great!
The bowling alley that I have was also nailed and glued together which if yours is that way would make it real fun to drill - NOT!

Yes I plan to sand it down and give it a coat! I need to fix my lotus ****** first. I trust me the top isn't going anywhere with me not fastening it yet.lol

I had him split the wood to 30" but one of the edges was a little messed up so I took it down to 29" and I think it's perfect!

The wood planks are 1" think I counter sunk the bolt in like 1/2" so there is no room to stock a wood piece in it. But I'm thinking a metal strip or angle

I bought 8 uppers and 8 bottoms finally getting to install them. BUT now that I am installing I find that one of the uppers, has 2 right (outer) sliding doors. I wonder if someone else got 2 left (inner) sliding doors, maybe we could swap. Also need 4 of the white nylon pieces that the sliding doors ride against, does anyone now where they can be purchased, haven't been able to find the manufacture, no name on anything except to state they were union made. Thanks for help.

The first place I would check is McMaster Carr. Rockler or some other woodworking supply would probably be next.

I recommend going out and buying a cheap HF planer. There is so much poly and wax build up on the alley that sanding would take forever. I hit mine with a planer first and then sanded. I probably took off 3/16" of wax/poly/wood before I could get an even color. You have plenty of material to work with. Just be careful as you get to the "arrows" some of them may be plastic.
