I know there have been posts about these before but I wanted some updated opinions.
I have a pair of the normal clamp pliers from blue point that ratchet and run around 20 bucks but I'm looking for a pair that has the cable and will let me get to the clamps that are impossible to get to with anything else
I have seen craftsman ones for 40bux and I see the snap on guy tokorro and he has a SO pair but they are around 115.
I have seen posts before saying even the SO ones have issues
Opinions?
Here are the sears craftsman ones at$40

I bought one from Advance Auto awhile back and the difference is the lock across the handle. The one I have auto lock as you squeeze but I hated, it doesn't work so smoothly.

I saw the CM after I bought mine and it's build better than mine and I wish I bought the CM instead.

The SO one looks beefy so you're paying for the quality design.

The craftsman ones aren't bad, use SYWR points and score some for cheap. But the snapon ones definitely are the best, but you pay for it...

I could buy 3 pairs of craftsman ones for the SO ones price. But I know you can probably get replacement cables n whatnot for so ones and who knows the direction sears is goin
Which ones physically work better?

SO and Matco make the best although the Matco one's have been known to wear out the locking ratchet.

A couple times ago when I was on the truck I asked my dealer about a pair and he said he usually carries a pair but he happened to warranty out a pair earlier in the morning. He showed me the broken pair he had and they looked like an older style so maybe the newer ones are better

I use the Astro pneumatic as well at my home shop and they work great. if I was using them professionally I would get those snap on one. They look awesome. When you need them you really need them.

Does it look exactly the same as the one I showed? Worth the $$?

ToolTopia has the Astro's on sale as we speak for $32.

Astros? Never even heard of those
32 bucks sounds great. What's the quality like

When the cable operated hose clamp pliers first came out, they were under a French patent. Your pliers could say Mayhew or a tool truck brand but, most of them were French made. The big thing to me is the latch. Some pliers only have a single hook while others have a series of teeth that let you adjust tension on the clamp which is useful for positioning the clamp. With the single hook type your hand is applying the tension when it's not on the hook and that can be challenging at times. :dunno:

consider these from Mayhew:

Yes mine look like the snap on you pictured, to me yes they are worth the $$$, but I use them multiple times every day.

I would get the Astro 9409a over the Craftsman one. The Astro lets you adjust the cable when it gets stretched over time. The $32 one at Tooltopia is a different model, it says it's larger for trucks. The more common 9409a model runs around $40 everywhere I looked.

So I almost pulled the trigger on the snap on ones on the truck on Thursday but figured I'd wait just a little but yet. I have gone this long without them.
The craftsman ones....if I was to break the cable, is it something I can just replace with a piece of cable from the hardware store and crimp a ferrul on the end or what? I'm just curious as to longevity if sears would go down the *******

I find it surprising that a $30 tool is more important to you than the closing of a nation wide business :lol_hitti

I bought the craftsman one about a year ago.

The most I use them is once a week. So I can't justify paying snap on price for this tool.

The pair I got came with a cable repair kit. I am happy with them so far. No problems.

I have the snap ons and they work great and I have never had an issue with cable bind like my old blue points did.

I had to fix the cable on the old blue points about every 3 months until finally my dealer swapped out the snap on for the blue points since they are now discontinued.

And my snap on due say made in France

i have the snap on ones that you pictured got them with student discount and have had no problems! although one tech i work with says they dont close small enough for some of the baby clamp although i havent had that issue, just something to consider

last week when i was on the SO truck they have a new set available. it is a new cable set with like a lisle style piston compressor for the handle and two idiviable clips to grip the clamp ill try to grab a pic of it next time im on the truck but this one will open very large for the biggest clamps out there possible hd or disel. and it looks like it will handle the smallest of small clamps as well

I'm in the UK , bought a Sealey branded pair , absolute junk , failed on first time use, the locking pawl stripped its teeth , way too soft .
Sealey branded stuff used to have a reasonable name, going to avoid it whenever I can now

Ok, I had no idea these things even existed. I did a valve job on my sons '96 Blazer over the Christmas break, and no kidding, I probably wasted 10+ min. Per hose fiddling around with channel lock pliers.
Astro's are now on my must have list.

I'm confused. Is pants good or bad?

Awesome on both counts!
One of the GJ members will be doing a review video on the 9409A in a couple of weeks.
I will make sure to post here.
