Anybody done a cable railing system on their deck? Anybody found one that doesn't break the bank? I have a big deck with 12 sections of railing not counting stairs. One system needed over $7000 in just cable terminations.

Triple S Steel has them in their catalog. They are about page 160 or so if you want to look them up on line. Call them next week for pricing. They have a couple of regional warehouse including one in Texas.. I have bought a lot from the local warehouse in Knoxville Tn and have found them very easy to deal with on local pickup...

I used Cable Rail from Feeny. More cost for material but very fast install. Of course I was paying people to install.
Expansion and contraction can be a big issue. I would go over the finished job with the homeowner and explain that as the temperature warms up the cables may sag but don't tighten them because when it cools down they will tighten up.
Wood posts can cause problems with final adjustments. They will tend to bow if you aren't careful. Start in the middle and work up and down in very small increments.
If you are having the work inspected verify if you need to go with less than 4" spacing. Some inspectors will require a smaller space so that if the cables are pulled on the space will not exceed 4".

I used Feeney on my deck and love it but it did cost a small fortune.

Here is one my son's FIL done for them before Christmas. My son said even this little bit was really expensive, but his FIL paid for the parts, too. This is in his cabin house.

I researched Cable systems and priced out from building my own to purchasing per part all over the web. Also looked at purchasing the cable in 1000 ft spools since my deck was huge circle and I needed 11 runs to meet the 3" spacing for code. Ended up purchasing Jakob Rail systems in a kit form with the cable ends from Homeless Depot . It is a on line only plus cheaper than if I built everything in bulk. You can't purchase the ends from Feeny in bulk and beat the price from the Home Depot kits. The manufacture is from Sweden and the quality and kit was very nice. I may be able to send a pic if needed when the temp rises above -6* today . The kits range with 11 runs from 10' 50' ft lengths .

We went with Westbury verticable from decksdirect.com. Total cost was maybe a little over $7,000 for material. I did the installation myself. Not complicated but time consuming for one person. This system has the vertical cables and comes in sections. Hoping that the pics show up, first time posting them.

I'm pricing the post and top rail from a local fabricator (2x2 welded steel, hot dip galvanized) to see if that beats the pre-fab posts and rails for price. The best price I have found on fittings are for site swaged fittings. A swager is only $125.

I did two on outdoor decks and two on interior stairs. They were stainless steel, all parts and cables. The owner was wealthy and paid through the nose. The good stuff costs a lot.
