I'm just finishing putting up the plywood walls in my workshop and now I'm on to thinking through the lighting. I'm planning on doing both woodworking and metalworking (hobby stuff now, maybe turning into side business someday for furniture). Kind of kicking around splitting the two halves (right/left) with a commercial curtain system to keep saw dust and metal shavings apart.
Anyways, the workshop is approximately 500 sq. ft in area. (21.5'wide x 23.5'deep). It has a staggered ceiling front/back, but both halves are relatively low- approx. 9' high in front half and 7' high in back half. It doesn't have any permanent lighting in it yet. Based on Platonic Solid’s recommendation for low ceiling situations, I'm really thinking about going with the 1x4 LumeGen Flat Panel LEDs (5000 Lumen, 40 watts, 80CRI).
I have few questions that I could use some help with…
1. Can anyone provide formulas I need to consider for this type of light (LED edge lit flat panel) to calculate how many panels I would need? Also, what are those calculations based upon achieving- what standard, or typical goal/minimum is suggested?
2. I'm not sure whether I should go with the 4000K or 5000k color temp option. I have plywood walls (I plan to leave them bare as I like the warm feeling), and had read in a previous post elsewhere that 4000 might be better for that situation so it doesn’t look so yellow... but I also read that 5000k is kind of the standard that paint shops use. I probably would tend to lean closer to the 4000k end of the spectrum (warmer rather than cool) just in in personal taste, but wanted to get other thoughts?
3. I looked over all of the layouts in Platonic Solid’s sticky, but I'm not quite sure how I should handle this with regard to putting a curtain down the middle. I had kicked around splitting the middle with 1x4s on each side and using 2x4s in the rest of the shop... but I could just use 1x4s throughout... other than that, I’m not sure why I would want to use 1x4s or 2x4s other than based on best cost. Thoughts?
4. For me, I’m wondering if it is worth using CRI=90 lighting for any portion of the shop? I had read that the CRI=80 lighting is often good enough, but for a person is doing pictures/video, they might want to use CRI=90. I also read that a person could get by just adding that better lighting in the specific area that need that type of lighting in and leave all the rest =80. I was just thinking about this in the context of if I ever started doing photos of my furniture for marketing purposes. Thoughts?
