so i bought this caliper wind back kit (link below) to use at home. kit works great every time i have used it. no issues there. the only problem i have with it is the little handle always bends and its getting to the point where its maybe going to snap off one day.

my question is has anyone modified these in someway to help this isses? maybe some ideas?

I have that set, from HF, Mac tries to sell them too. I never felt that the handles were flimsy, maybe weld a nut on the end so you could use a ratchet.

looks identical to the original HF set (before they downsized it to just one handle).

my HF set never felt flimsy either, but for $18.99, just buy another kit...at that price I wouldn't sweat it if the original failed...

Maybe I'm missing something but I have always used a C-Clamp with a small block of wood to press the piston back in... :)

You are missing something. :D Some Bosch (and I assume others) rear calipers have the parking brake integrated into the caliper such that retracting the piston involves turning it in one direction or another (based on the side of the vehicle.) These tools and the cubes achieve this.

I recently had the displeasure of performing this operation on a Ford Freestyle. What a pain in the ***. I had both the HF kit and a cube. The cube works better since you can put it on drill with a 3/8" adapter.

I wonder how feasible it is to just cut off the handle and replace it with a long bolt, or weld a socket on the end of the handle and use an impact for those lazy moments. I don't do enough brake jobs per year to justify for any modification to that tool though.

Okay, I see. My newest vehicle with 4 wheel discs is an '00 Monte Carlo. It doesn't have an issue with the "C-Clamp" method. :bounce:

I like this style of wind-back tool;

Only good for fronts or those with the EPB rears. My original set in the house looks similar to the set posted but it has a 17mm hex on the back of the handle to use a socket on it if needed.

Are you putting a pipe on that little handle? I'm not sure a human being has the strength to bend those handles with bare hands. I've never had trouble with my set.

Soooo.....just open up the hole a bit & step up to a larger rod. What am I missing?

I’ve made tons of tap handles and vise handles like this. Someone w a lathe could tap the ends for machine screws, or you could just tack a “bump” on each end

nope no pipe or anything. just by hand. have used it for a year. i only used it on the wind back calipers. not on regular push in style calipers.
