I am getting ready to build a garage.
30x45 with three 9x7 garage doors on the 45 foot wall.

My question is how do you measure and figure out how to space the garage doors so they're evenly spaced?

45 - 27 = 18
18 / 4 = 4.5

45' the size of the wall.
27' = 9' doors x 3 doors.

18' is the left over space not utilized by doors.

4 is the wall space needed.

Wall - Door - Wall - Door - Wall - Door - Wall

Each WALL must be 4' 6" to be equal.

I'm not a framer so I can't tell you this will actually work but that's the math.

That's the same math I did I just wanted to verify that was right, thank you!

I'm going to suggest 9' wide x 8' tall doors while you are still framing.

Much better overall result imo.

Also, if you have a trailer you might want to make one door 10' wide in case you ever wanted to back it in. Many trailers go out to the max 8'6" width and you can see it can get a little dicey with 3" per side of nominal clearance.

Thanks I already have my plans approved with the above specs

The math part is relatively easy...
The real question- why? I personally, if doing a garage that size would push the doors to one end allowing space that could be dedicated to “other activities”.

Considering a minimum depth for a garage is 20’ (and that is “very” minimal), that would only leave 10’ beyond- not a lot of space to do anything with!

Definitely go with 10x8 doors at a minimum. I did and I love them. I have another garage with 8x7 doors and I always worry when pulling in.

Agree with the above, go with 10 ft doors, you have the room. Not sure how you have approved plans but don't know where the doors will go. Hope the framer is more competent than your architect if true.

Another vote for for 10x8 doors. My full size van barely gets through a 8' wide door, maybe 2-3" mirror clearance on each side. No excuse for 7' tall doors on any garage much less a 30x45. A 10' wide door will give much more wiggle room and clearance for a 8.5' wide trailer. Don't worry about symmetry or exact spacing, it's a garage and you will soon forget about it. Adding a stud or two between doors isn't a problem.

This forum is full of "how can I make my doors wider" (or taller) threads, I haven't seen anyone wanting to make them smaller.

A 12' and two 10' doors might be my choice and it would still leave room for a pedestrian door. The building dept. anticipates changes from the plans, moving/enlarging doors and windows happens everyday. They are more worried about proper structure and if you do it to code they won't even raise an eyebrow. Run the changes by them if that makes you more comfortable.

I think he's mainly referring to all of the morons that are telling him to get bigger doors when he already told us the size of the doors is already final.

I'm always trying to figure out if people just can't read, don't care, have mental deficiencies, or all three when I read responses in a thread like this.

***** is pretty harsh. Lots of people put in doors and later wish they were bigger. They are just opinions/suggestions. Many had reasons to back up their input. Some were over the top for size but that's just the nature of GJ it seems. I see it this way - they asked a question and got the answer. They also got some related suggestions with things they may not have thought of. After all, he posted that he was a noob. Instead of "no help" they got more than they asked for. The only thing they didn't get is someone offering to come and do it for them. :D
