Yeah, "Go Harley!". 2/3 Asian parts, overpriced and sitting on showroom floors.

Used bikes are a dime a dozen, because all of those "bikers" that bought them...aren't.

Their Chinese leathers and chrome accessories can be found on your local Craigslist, along with the other 5 year old fads.

Photo borrowed from ebay ('cause "my" CBX is buried in a SoCal garage).
The six pipes get quite a reaction from other motorists. You can watch them counting pipes at stoplights. ;)

Fast, smooth and reliable. Zoooomm...

i don't think 2/3 is correct, last i heard it was 81% domestic content but i could be wrong.harley has been using german designs for thier engines since the evo.you are correct about the fad bikers but they did keep the company in the black and a lot of that profit went into r&d. the quality has improved greatly since the shovelhead era. used bikes aren't really a dime a dozen.......the resale values are still the best of any bike made altough they do depreciate faster now than in the early 90's.

btw i still wear the same leathers i bought 20 years ago. they are well worn and not too pretty but like my favorite saying "it used to be about motorcycles.......now it's a f'ing fashion show"

Krusty, I could be wrong and don't have anything to back except for Google. The numbers I am seeing are 65%+ imported content.

Used bikes are pretty cheap (relatively) here.

I do have some 30-year-old Yamaha leathers. If I could still squeeze into them, I'd look like some kind of malformed banana slug.

True... I bought 2004 Sportster XL1200 custom in 2005 and keep it for 2 years ( i dont drive much because i love to drive my dad's Road King classic which i already put 3,000 miles for only 4 months after my dad bought it as used. then I found a 2003 HD Road King Classic as 100th annversity edition for 13,999 dollars with 20,000 miles... i just got love that bike. so i trade in my sportster (little below than what i expect for trade in value but what i did saw they sold it for 6,999 dollars while i bought it for 7,999 dollars between 2005 and 2007) i added the tachometer assembly ( i paid about 400 dollars and i am installed it not harley service dept..) but i already drive my 2003 HD road King classic 100th edition for almost 300 miles as i am soon will be above what my dad do with his Road king Classic...

Lot of harley dealers said that harley do hold good values if customers or Owners keep it in good shape and powertrains are good not damage...

Ya got me there. I can still corner pretty well with this one (works shocks and racetech forks), but not anything like you're able to.

If Harley could make something that could come reasonably close in performance to my "old man" Kawasakis, I'd seriously consider buying it.

What gets me about Harley is that they refuse to move forward technologically... their motor designs (with the exception of the water-cooled V-rod motor designed by Porsche) are decades old. Even the Buell line, which I respect for their chassis innovation, uses a souped-up Sportster powerplant that doesn't come close to comparing to modern Japanese sportbikes.

And as far as the "Made in the US" argument goes, there's a whole bunch of your HD that isn't... NONE of the electronics are US-made, nor is any fuel injection or carburetor... In fact, I recently rejetted the carbs on two friend's bikes, and they both had Mikuni carbs on them - same as my Kaws.

Interestingly enough, though, one thing you won't find on my Kaws that you'll find on HDs is Chinese parts.
And should you brave the vast line of HD accessories, Chinese products are rampant.

I remember when that CBX came out; I was a kid living in Northern California at the time. When ever one of those pulled up we all just stared at the HUGE engine, SIX PIPES!! I think KERKER headers had the trick setup for that bike. It just seemed like these guys were riding a engine and not a motorcycle. At the time, that thing came out, it was definitely the bad boy bike of the era; even as a young kid I knew what it was, when one pulled up beside us in traffic! I have seen those Corvette engined bikes; they seem similar to what the CBX once was but wow, ever seen one of those corvette bikes do a burn out? WHOA!!!!

Listen to this CBX with trick pipes!

seriously.........you ought to ride this

What's special about that one?

I've ridden plenty of HDs - from full dressers to huggers, a Deuce with all the Screamin' Eagle goodies (head, cams, pipes), a brand new V-Rod, and custom built choppers... with the exception of the V-Rod, they all had the same things in common: They're slow, loud, virtually no brakes, and they try to vibrate my freaking teeth out.

I did like the V-Rod... if I was in the market for a cruiser, and they were about half the price they are, the V-rod would be my pick.

what's special? have you ever built a bike from the ground up........designed, fabricated, welded, sanded, painted, gave you blood sweat and tears?

i built that bike from a pile of parts, and it has won trophies every time i showed her.

sure she's loud, i want the idiot's in cages to hear me so the don't cross into my lane because the "couldn't see me".

slow.....not hardly. crisp throttle response and she's been 110 mph. 100 in 2nd gear is rediculous.

brakes? i can bring her from 45 to a stop faster than my pickup.

and before you start on breakdowns, i don't carry a tool bag anymore cuz when i did i only used it on other people ****.

the vibration is sweet and the chicks dig it..........i have a 03 bagger and i can even see in the mirrors at 95.

the main thing about the ***** is she STILL draws a crowd when i drop her on the stand...............

i guess it's like trying to get a punk rocker to appreciate the blues.

I think we could appreciate it better if the picture as just a little bit bigger. From the tiny pic, it's hard not to think that the bike is a typical HD...

I appreciate choppers from a fabrication/artistic point of view. I admire the amount of work that people put into them. If I was a multi-millionaire, I'd decorate my house with them - beautiful bikes.

I have no desire to own one to ride. I ride about 20,000 miles every year - long trips, short rides, commuting, occasional street race... I don't really care about drawing crowds (which they both do anyway) or winning trophies.

You definitely have the cool factor going on there... no denying that. And if that's how you want to roll, more power to you. It's just not my cup of tea - your bike looks great, but it's not built to do what I want a bike to do... just like mine aren't built to do what you want them to do.

btw: I like punk rock... AND the blues. :)

I always wanted an HD. Never could afford one when I could still ride. The CBX is to this day, one of the badest bikes ever built. You can tell that exhaust note from 5 miles away! They are awsome!

I don't care much for the crotch rockets of today. I nearly killed myself at age 15 on a "street" bike. (Honda CM 400C) I shiver to think what would have happened on something like the newer ones. (Broken neck at C4-C5 and back a L4-L5, Crushed arteries in left leg at the knee, 9 broken ribs and LOTS of road rash.)

I tried riding again a few years back. A few of my buddies bought trendy bikes. They have all since sold them too. I borrowed one and spent the day on the back roads. It took me a good 15 minutes to get off the bike at the end of the day. It was another 2 weeks before I could walk without a limp. Somewhere around the 1 month mark all of the pain in my back went away. I would still love to ride, my body just doesn't agree.

I have one of each.

One for speed:

02 1200, cammed/piped/jetted/ported and all around tweaked a little, revalved forks/progressive rear shock

bandit003.jpg

And one for comfort:

97 Dyna super glide cammed/jetted/piped

harleystuff019.jpg

I had to give up the "on the tank" rockets, my TL1000R was the last.....I piled that into a rock at 50 and it left me with over $500,000.00 worth of titanium in my spine.

As you can see....I still ride.

Nothing beats the sound and feel of a good old Triumph getting kick started to life and then being pushed to its limits at 7000RPM screaming to hit the almighty TON!
Only a chosen few will ever experience this and if you have been blessed to do this consider yourself a better man than anyone who crawls on the back of a bike and God Forbid starts it with the push of a Button.
AMAL-smell my finger and you will know what I'm talking about!
