Calling all mechanics

I'm wondering how many bays you guys get to work on cars with. Like how many bays in your shop can you use at one time.

I ask because at work our "Master Technician" Thinks he can have 3 bays to himself. Our shop only has 9 bays plus an alignment rack bay. We have 9 Mechanics 8 full time 1 pt. So if he gets 3 bays then one person is pretty much fucked. So he moved my tool box down to the first bay which is already taken by another mechanic so he can take my old bay. No one in Management will tell him anything and he's starting to piss me off. So i moved my box back to where it was before and started working on a car. After i was done with that car i pulled it out, and he pulled in another car then went home for the day. What should i do to get the point across to him that i'm not gunna let him have 3 bays all to himself. I don't want to piss the guy off because he's smart and can be very helpful if needed. But i also need a bay to work on stuff.


Not to mention that when he moved my box i think he let it fall over onto the bottom drawers, they are now bent and fucked up. So i guess i'll be buying a new box. He moved it on lunch i think because no one saw him move it.

Doesnt matter if hes the master tech, he cant go around dumping people's boxes and not even telling them

You try explaining to the guy that you need to make a paycheck too?
In order to do so you need a bay to work in be calm and polite and if he is still a **** about it punch him right in the mouth. Sometimes there is only one way to deal with a bully.

Id tell management that your box was vandalized when you were at lunch after someone moved it without your permission and your not going to stand for it. Then take the casters off of the box so the fucker wont move.

Or you can leave the casters on and roll it out the door and into another shop.
Also you could fill his box full of motor oil before you leave or spray his bays with Tinks skunk scent. Glue a huge ***** to the top of his lift so he is crowned as a huge ****. I could go on but i'll stop there.

This is a management issue. I'm from the boat biz, not cars, but the issue is the same. Sorry, I don't go with the fight method. Two tech's start swinging, both tech's are gone. If a guy starts playing prima donna and hogging the shop / equipment etc. - It is my job to stop it. And trust me, it will stop immediately. One man, one bay.

If your management won't step up, you might want to consider shopping yourself around.

2-3 depending on what you worked on. We moved dead cars out of the stalls if needed and everyone helped.

When I was a newbie at the dealership the cleaning crew moved my new snap on box and scuffed it. I went wild. Management blew it off. So I chained it to the pole next to it. Still tried to move it. Now I'M PISSED, service manager walks by and I have the cover off the outlet and a roll of wire and a metal grate. He asks what I'm doing. I tell him if the clean crew won't leave my tool box alone I'm going to shock the $h!t out of them till they do.

Was told not to do that as it might hurt them. Said OK, but if my box was F'ed with tonight I was taking it out on him! He got the message and I never had that problem again.

Around here its not the management you worry about pleasing its the lead guy on the floor. If you bump heads with the floor lead too much you could get knocked for not being a team player. Im in the fab/ machine building biz. I will say management asks me if a new tech will cut it, if he is a *** i have no problem letting them know. I have 2 tables and the apprentices share 1, a perk of being the lead i guess.

The fact that he did not do so, is why I have "manager" in quotes.

When there are no bays....Start working on stuff out in the parking lot with a floor jack...the manager might see that there is a problem?

Well I have 3 hoists and 4 flat stalls, but we aren't crowded for space here. I don't care who he is, no one has the right to touch your box. If mgmt won't do anything about it, roll out of there, it isn't going to get any better.

if you dont have an assign bay then you must not be a mechanic, helper maybe. because a dealer not going hire a mechanic that dont produce, cant produce without a bay

The last shop I worked in it was one lift and one flat per tech except the a;ignment tech he also had the alignment rack to work off as well. But service manager in times of heavy work load would asign work to others on alignment rack when no alignments were scheduled to help keep flow going, would upset the alignment guy as he was a premadonna at times. Anyway my flat stall was on the end and kind of cramped so when the tech next to me left and the did not replace, they downsized at that time as economy was tanking. I then also got his flat bay and lift bay too as I would do and work on anything they asked me too including other techs comebacks after they failed multiple times and refused to fix for free, so I guess the service mananger made it up to me in more space to work and also extra pay for being so accomodating. I never asked or demanded, plus always kept my area clean.

Either each mech gets a bay, or you have more people than work... Talk it over with your supervisor and if they need to have a staff meeting to set the record straight, so be it. If they want to let him have all the space he wants and the rest of the mechanics fight for whats left... my advise is to find somewhere else where you can WORK instead of getting jacked around...

Weird situation. I've never heard of an employee not having space to work. Not in any profession. If someone is moving your personal property out, especially the "master technician" and no one says anything THAT might be saying something. Shop around! Good luck.

I don't think its a he doesn't like me situation. It's a he's been there longer than anyone else and he thinks he can do anything he wants and there wont be any consequences.

On a good note:
Talked to the District Manager today (Our GM is on vacattion) He cut me a $3,000 check for my $400 tool box. So i called my snap on dealer and picked up an old master series for $900. The rest will go towards tools.

you know, a capactor, if charge doesnt need a power source, once it pops, its dead. you could hide it in the bottom drawer, charge, and it will pop the daylight out of him when he touch the top lid. no cords, must be static electricty bud, quit dragging your feet

Wait till all "his" bays have work in them. Pull your work up behind those bays and start doing your jobs looks to me that he's going to be severely hampered in moving any cars in or out.
One day he may find it tough to work when he cant get his box unlocked. You know those locks do fail every so often

He didn't do anything about the master tech. But we were both working yesterday and he smarted off to me and i just went off, i chewed him out and told him he's lucky i haven't kicked his ***. He moved the truck from my bay and was nice to me all day. I guess maybe sometimes you gotta put a bully in their place...

Bingo.

I had a new dept manager come in one day and go off on me - I took him into my office and calmly told him that if he wanted to ream me out about something, do it in private not in front of the employees.

The next time he went off on me out in the shop I got right in his face and mf'd him up one side and down the other as loudly as I could till he literally ran out of the shop. The next time he had an issue he asked me if he could talk to me then we went into an office and hashed out the problem. We were good from then on.

You cannot let people push you around, but violence is never the right answer in a work situation - IMHO.

I think you did the right thing to stand up to him in public, but now's the time to offer the olive branch, you never know when a smart experienced guy can help you out - buy him a coffee and a donut and offer your hand (not an apology) - it could really help in the future.
