A good friend runs an estate sale company. When she has a lot of tools car parts or electronics. She call me to help with pricing. If there is anything I want she gives me first pick and a fair deal.
This drill press is clean as it was one of three in the shop. It was in a very well equipped home machine shop. The guy built small steam engines. Really cool stuff.
Anyway, this drill press didn't sell. Just about everything else did. My friend asked me if I was interested. I said yes if the price was right as I really don't need one. She said 150$ plus I could have all of the drill bits left. I said ok.
It needs some love. Belts a new cord some cleaning. The only issue is the vari-slo attachment is installed wrong. I don't think it was the PO seems someone messed with it. Looks to be just set up wrong.
I think I got a great deal. Not sure what I'm going to do with it. I may sell it.

Was that in the suburbs of Chicago? Some of me posted it a few days ago.

That's a beauty. I'd have a real tough time selling that unless I had a bigger industrial DP

If you had put Craftsman vari-slo in the title this thread would have gotten a lot more action, and a bunch of "you *****".........

No one bought that? Unless she was selling it for over $350 that would have been snatched up like a dog going through a litter box.

Well , I'll be the first - You ****. It's worth every penny of $ 150.00. Guy's are always looking for the variable speed. In my area that DP without the VS would get $ 100.00 easy.

It came with a bunch of Usa bits. I put new belts on it. Runs smooth one belt was way too tight. I had to cut it off. The motor cord needs replacement. That brings me to the problem.
Several years ago I restored my dads drill press. It's a bench size cman from the 30s as far as I can tell. I'm not sure what to do. Do I sell the newer one and keep dads.. or keep the new one and move dads into deep storage. Sell dads? Nope...
the new one runs better and it's a variable speed. It is a better press.
I'd hate to just put dads on a shelf. I'd like to keep it and hope one of the kids wants it. My oldest may. He's just not ready yet. I'll grab a pic of the one I restored.

I saw the Estate sale post and I would have been there to buy it Thursday morning but I had big banquet events two days in a row and was out of town on Saturday. I really wanted to go get that one since it is within a close drive. If you decide to get rid of it let me know - PLEASE DON"T PART IT OUT! LOL.

I was watching a Vari-slo attachment that was in very nice condition on eBay. The auction closed this past Monday and the final price was $280 plus 13.60 for shipping.

You got an amazing deal for $150. Congrats.

OH Yeah. That's nice. I have a newer Craftsman drill press, but one of that vintage is on my list of things to get. Down here, it seems they are hard to find.

That light assembly is worth at least $50. Nice score! Would you mind taking a pic of how/where the light is mounted?

A Craftsman with VariSlow, two vises, mortising attachment, extra spindle and some bits, $150 was a yousuck steal deal.

I agree!

I lived in downers grove in 1998. Worked at the jiffy lube on Ogden across the street from jewel osco. I was 19 and a liquor store used to sell me beer---red dog cuz it was cheap. Ugh. But better than my roommates Strohs.

I came across a similar one in about an hour drive away from me. Asking $200. Can you guys give me an idea if it's worth it? Seems rather high to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks.
That's a bench top unit. It all seems to be there. If it's in nice shape and you need it go for it. Use it or restore it. Lots of help here.
As a side note As I mentioned I didn't know what to do with my dads drill press. I found it a good home. One of my best friends asked my about a getting a small drill press. I said have I got a good deal for you.
It resides in his shop and he loves it.
He said if I need it back just ask. And if something happens to me he'll make sure it gets to one of my sons. And yes I trust him with my life.
