You might look into Drop Cam. We use one at our business. They record to a cloud server for next to nothing, and the camera itself takes about ten minutes to get setup. may or may not be what you are looking for, but you can speak through the camera via iphone app, and it has great image quality with IR capability too for under $200.

I have had a couple of q-see systems over the years(the first one died after a year or two and Costco gave me a full refund). I also had a lorex that I tried before purchasing the original Q-see system.

The lorex was ****. The Q-sees were great. There was also a vast improvement between the original and the 2nd one I got. Both were 16 camera versions.

I suggest waiting for them to go on sale at costco and picking one up!

Just a small update for the search button...

In the end I purchased a Swann system with a 1TB HD with 960H and 8 cameras with 700TVL. It's a wired system, and I got it on sale for about $300.

Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase at this price point. I've got everything hooked up and working well. For anyone who wants good HD quality cameras, definitely go with something in the 720p or 1080 range. The 700TVL cameras are ok, but far away you won't be able to distinguish much. In the end, the physical presence of the cameras alone will help accomplish some of the deterance I was looking for. Anybody who truly wants your stuff will come get it regardless of cameras/alarms/etc.
