Those with experience with Camo side screwing PT deck boards, what’s your opinion of it? It’s either this or the traditional face screwing.

My original thought is this looks great, would really clean up the looks of the deck surface. But thinking about it more I have concerns that if a screw needs removal, that would be very difficult. Also the smaller diameter of the screw and that it’s going through less of the board vs face screwing concerns me.

What are your thoughts?

I'm a fan of the Camo system. 3.5 years ago, I replaced the decking on my back deck and built a horizontal board fence around my steps using the system. Those two projects were cedar. This past fall, I used it again on a smaller deck for my front entrance, this time using cedartone PT decking. No complaints at all.

The only issues I've encountered with screws getting loose were on a couple of boards that I knew were going to give me trouble (had to really work to straighten them out during install). But even then, I've been impressed with the fact that I've only had a couple issues given the material I was working with. I just faced screwed those boards down using a few Camo screws (countersinking them slightly below the boards) and they've held tight since. Removing screws is easy using the bit included with the kit, you just have to make sure you've got the angle right. I wouldn't say that its easier or harder than a face screw.

The system makes for a very nice, clean look when you are done. As an added bonus, no screw heads sticking up to catch your snow shovel during the winter months.

Installation with the tool allows the bit to not follow the screw going down. So removal is easy since you will be inserting the bit all the way into the faster without the installation tool.
