Ford service manuals often call for specialty tools that aren't always needed, I'm preparing to replace the water pump and the job calls for this tool.

1) Does anyone know if this tool is required?
2) If required, does the brand matter? The OTC version is fairly expensive but some off brands can be bought for about $30.

I normally jump at the opportunity to buy new tools but I can't see myself ever using this again so I am hoping to avoid spending the money.

For those wondering why this might be needed, the water pump is driven by the timing chain. This will be the worst water pump job I have encountered.

Thanks,
Mark

Thank you guys, I appreciate the quick feedback. I'll pick up one of the less expensive versions.

Thanks,
Mark

As a secondary check, use a paint marker and mark the chains and the gears. I would also recommend to use the rev silicone that is specific to that model. If I remember correctly it is TA 357. Also called high performance silicone. If you use the incorrect rtv it can cause the oil to foam up and cause possible engine problems.
When resealing the front cover, don't use an over abundance of silicone. Have seen that come off and clog oil pickup tubes.
If you have any questions, send me a pm, I work at a ford dealership.
