i ran 8-2 with ground on a 40 amp circuit for my dust collector. The machine doesn't have a cord and you have to wire into its switch. Can I use the leftover Romex and wire it into the box and put a plug on it? If not what should I use for a cord? it's interesting the machine uses 12-2 wire from the switch to the motor but calls for a 40 amp circuit. The motor is rated at 22 amps.

The answer is no.

In regards to sizing wire, motor circuits are sized differently because the breaker doesnt protect the wire. The overloads do. The breaker is sized higher to prevent nuissance trips due to in-rush currents. Size wire for motor circuits at 125% of NEC FLC table current. And the 12-2 on the machine probably has a higher temperature rating!

But if a plug is used, the overcurrent protection cannot exceed the rating of the plug / receptacle. The only way for those ratings to be used is when hardwired.

Based on the FLA of the motor, its rated at more than 3hp so it needs to be hardwired...
