Can A/C be too big?

Looking to get an A/C window unit for a 24 x 24 garage. 1 wall is garage door, one wall is interior wall, and 2 walls are sheetrocked, but not insulated. Insulated attic space above. I'm guessing about 10K-12K btu to cool; does this sound about right? I found a 25K btu A/C on Craigslist, but would that be too big? What would happen?

A unit that is too big will cool the space off quicker, and cycle off, not giving it time to remove the humidity from the air. As a garage space though, with doors opening, pulling hot cars in, etc. I personally don't think a 25k would be too much. Maybe you will get a more qualified opinion from an A/C expert.

Recently replace a window unit. It's new and looks fancy with remote control, bells and whistles, however when it comes to cooling, they are not what they used to be. :mad:

The reason they don't work as good is they now use R410A so they need a bigger condenser to remove the same amount of heat. It is hard to put a bigger condenser in a window unit where size matters.

Going oversized can be bad for a few reasons. It will cool down too fast and it will cycle a lot which is hard on the compressor, you will have a low evaporator load which can cause your TXV to hunt if it has one if not it can cause flood back.

2 tons is a lot of cooling for a garage but with so little insulation. If you use it for a few hours during the hottest part of the day and the sun is shining on the uninsulated walls you might get away with it just fine. If you plan to use it to keep the garage maintained at 68 24/7 you will have problems at night when the solar load is gone and the ambient drops.

Personally I rather have it a little small so you can dry the area out (dehumidify). A AC to big will cuse humidity issues and could make the area feel clammy.

When your AC is on the moisture in the air condenses on the coil (just like it would on a cold beer). The water then runs out the drain. SO, The longer you run a unit the more air moves across the coil and the more moisture you ring out of the air.

A Large AC will cool the area down, but it will cycle off before it has a chance to move enough air across the coil to drop out the moisture.

(I could get into the dewpoint in the area etc, but it would bore the s**t out of most of you.

That's because they have smaller compressors for a given tonnage. They've changed the rules regarding A/C efficiency, so manufacturers purposely undersize the compressor. Smaller compressors use less electricity, so, units "appear" to have a greater SEER rating. Yet they are still able to claim full tonnage on the label.
About 20 years ago one major manufactuer tried this idea, and it came back to bite them in the ****. They marketed what they called a "short" 3 ton unit. Not overall height, but capacity. 3 tons is 36,000 BTUH. Their unit had a 32,500 BTUH compressor. A little "short" on capacity. But it undercut everyone else's 3 ton units in price. So, they sold well. Until it got real hot, and the units couldn't cool the house down. But when people complained, the company said it was advertized as a "short" 3 ton. Eventually they were forced to drop the line. But now all manufacturers are doing basically the same thing, and it's legit.
Don't go by what the ad label says, or even the salesperson. Open up the box, retrieve the literature, and check to see what the compressors actual capacity is rated at. 12,000 BTUH is one ton. If the unit says 2 ton, but the compressor is not rated at 24,000 BTUH, it's a short unit.

You can definitely go too big on an A/C, for the reasons already stated. However, I would err on the side of too much because when you turn on a garage A/C, it's probably really hot and humid in there. Plus your garage probably isn't insulated or sealed as well as your house. You want the extra capacity.

My garage A/C is "adequately" sized. It gets up to 90 degrees in there in the afternoon, and it takes the unit at least an hour to get it down to 80. I wish I would have gone a little larger.

Fact is, I just went by the warehouse yesterday, looking for a "3 TON" unit. Opened up the literature - compressor was rated at 34,000 BTU. Short units are everywhere these days.

I used to have to cool an equipment shed (concrete building) with electronics (Cable TV Headend) I had 4 tons of ac to keep it cool. It would cycle and not remove all the moisture too well. This wasnt an issue because static electricity is a bad thing in there. Howver the condesner used to freeze up with 3 inches of ice on hot days.

With all respect to Bonneyman, this response is incomplete and misleading.

All current reputable American HVAC vendors rate their equipment according to ARI standards. Among other requirements, this calls for an indoor condition of 80/67 db/wb, with an outdoor temperature (for the condensing unit) of 95 db. In order to allow an 'apples to apples' comparison, all equipment specifications include this performance parameter. (In this case, I would also recommend that energy usage comparisons be done by the EER rating and not the SEER.)

Due to a variety of factors, equipment tested under these standards, say for a nominal 3 ton AC unit, may result in a total cooling output (sensible and latent) of anywhere from roughly 33,000 to 37,000 btuh. This information is freely available and does not constitute fraud or deception on the part of the manufacturer. This is the case throughout the industry. And just as the equipment varies according to actual output, so does the electrical requirements, the physical size, operating efficiencies, features, etc.

What is important is that the selected equipment meets the calculated requirements for the intended purpose. For some specific applications one vendor's equipment may be more desirable than another. An informed decision by an experienced designer or engineer will result in the proper equipment selection.

What is equally important, if not even more so, is that for most applications the interior conditions will more likely be 74-76 degrees db, not the 80 degrees used for performance testing. And as for outdoor temperatures, many projects will require a higher, or sometimes lower, outdoor temperature. Again, here is where the professional will have an advantage over the lay person.

For home garages, maybe this isn't so very important. I suspect that just getting in the ball park will be satisfactory for most weekend mechanics. But for your main residence, or a commercial or institutional project, getting it right means the difference between a successful installation and a possible career-ending mistake.

As to manufacturers taking a little liberty with published performance data, I am aware of one commercial manufacturer that was caught doing this in the 1990's. It was a disaster for the manufacturer, the design engineers, Mechanical Contractors and the property owners who got suckered. The lawyers made out quite well I imagine.

Just wanted to add some perspective. Perform a proper load calculation, and select the appropriate equipment.
