Can a hammer drill work as an impact driver?

I know that hammer drills can drill holes in concrete (and other materials) considerably better compared with impact drivers. However, I do not know if hammer drills have a button or so to make them work like an impact driver and so drive screws better.

Honest answer is, I don't know. Curious to find out. I remember when I thought you couldn't use an impact driver to drill holes in metal.

The hammering mechanism is a small in/out punch for masonry holes. It's not the same action as the rotational hammer mechanism of an impact driver or wrench. I'm sure it'll drive screws but no idea why you would want to with it. Seems like it would want to tear up screw heads, bits, and want to jump out on you. Regular drill mode would be better.

You can run a screw with it if it is a normal drill with a hammer function however the hammer function is a forward motion not a rotation like an impact driver is

Having had the selector in the wrong place and tried to drive a screw it's a great way to booger up the head.

That being said I think you have a bigger then 3/8ths drill motor that you owe it to yourself to get one that hammers.

A hammer drill is linear axial hammer action, an impact wrench is rotary hammering action. Completely different.

No, for reasons already stated.

Even if this isn't 100% attributable to placebo effect, the benefit would be negligible compared to an impact driver.
