Can anyone ID this old Delta Drill Press?

A friend of mine knows a guy that is trying to sell this drill press. He sent me these pictures a couple of days ago and I've had no luck ID'ing this thing. Looks like it is missing the belt guard and I've never seen a Delta with the motor mounted down low like this (homemade engineering?). He sad it takes "shank type" drill bits and doesn't have a normal chuck nor could he find a model number. I could pick it up for about $100 but didn't know if it would be worth the price or not to restore?

I have an old Delta that's similar. I'm fairly certain that the motor mount was modified to mount a 2nd set of pulleys for speed reduction. There's probably a morse taper in the head that you could install a Jacobs chuck in.

IMO, $100 is WAY too much for that. I paid $25 for mine at an auction and it's in far better shape with no rust. That one's probably worth $25 on a good day IF the bearings are in good shape. To be useful, you'll need to find a chuck and a taper... that's going to cost at least $30-40. Then there's the issue of the mods... are they well done? Does is wobble like mad?

Don't know the market in your area, but around here, CL is littered with good drill presses for <$100 almost every day. I'd pass on that one.

My thoughts have already been expressed, in an earlier thread, regarding old drill presses.

And yes, I would agree, $25 would be about right for that one. One deficiency has been corrected ....................speed reduction, with that intermediate pulley system.

Yeah I have been watching craigslist for over 3 months now and nothing has shown up in my area. I figured $100 was a little much but it's been my only choice so far. I'll keep looking because this one wasn't exactly what I wanted to begin with. I was hoping to find something as close to original as possible just to have a restoration project over the next couple of months.

The one in my shop at work is this same model. It's a good drill press. The guard has a pin that drops into the socket on top to allow quick removal of the cover for speed changes. The guard may be hard to find. The motor mount has been modified with the jackshaft to allow more speed ranges, and would likely be easy to convert back to original. Would you like for me to get the model number for you next week? I may even have a parts breakdown on it. If so, PM me.

FWIW, the old Delta DPs have interchangeable spindles. You can drop out that Morse taper spindle and install in one with a Jacobs chuck already mounted on it. The spindles usually sell for about $25. Hang on to the #2MT spindle, as it is good for larger bits from 1/2"-3/4".

That speed reducer is quite a sorry piece of shadetree engineering. For a lot less work and material, the builder could have made one like Delta designed and sold.

Good older floor model DPs aren't as common as the bench models. I bought three bench models; a 15" Delta for $35 and two 12" Deltas, one with stand and light for $50 each. I've never seen a working floor model sell for less than $75. The rust is easy to remove. I'd check it out, especially for play in the spindle. A dial indicator with a magnetic base is needed for that. If the spindle bearings are tight, I'd certainly pay $50 and maybe $75 for it.

Well I went and checked out the press and the bearings are shot and it has been welded on (very poorly may I add). The speed reduction was a joke also. Definitely going to be looking elsewhere. Hopefully something will come along eventually. I told the guy I would give him $50 for it and he sent me walking.....said $150 was his bottom dollar....

for 100 bucks, you can get a LOT nicer unit than that, and likely one that doesn't need anything. Looking at the pics, I wouldn't haul it home for it (unless it had some parts that i needed for a better one), knowing what i've seen on craiglist and a couple of estate auctions i've been to recently. That guy's an idiot for not taking your offer of 50. Look around and be patient-100 bucks buys a lot more press than that.

Start looking for a compressor,or a table saw. That's when the drill presses show up
They will appear though,six months ago it was drill presses here, now it's table saws

No but he told me I was crazy for offering him $50. He said it was a $500 piece of equipment haha I'll just keep being patient!
