Can anyone identify this old wood vise?

9" jaws. I can see a faded name on the handle, but can't make it out. Anyone have any info?

Reminds me of a Sheldon.

That is a quick acting design. Instead of cranking and cranking to move the jaws in and out, the mechanism allows you to just slide it in and out and use that cool big handle to do the final tightening into position.

If you don’t do woodworking and don’t really need it, I bet you could sell it for decent money here on the GJ classifieds.

I mentioned Sheldon because of that handle but recognized that the nose piece is not like Sheldon.

Is anybody reading this thread registered with Worthpoint to go onto their site and give us the selling price?

That vise is certainly unusual and would make a great user or addition to somebody’s collection.

I have a friend who put a Sheldon QR vise on a reproduction piece of furniture workbench he made, so that was a quick one to check. Another friend posted a CL link to a similar QR vise for those of us crazy enough to follow in his steps. That one was a Wyman Gordon, so I knew I had at least one name to chase down, before the rabbit hole of googling

Love the idea of that style of QR vise, but I even have trouble with the more popular turn it back 1/4 turn and its a QR, so I still have the slow wind them up style vises.

Thanks for the info. This is helpful for understanding how this vise works. Unfortunately it is currently stuck and wont open/close more than a few mm. There is a ratcheting piece which seems to be stuck in the engaged position.

Not sure if the ratchet is slightly broken or a spring is missing. I'll have to play around with it a bit more to see if I can dislodge it somehow
