Can Casters easily replaced on a snap on box ?

I'm out of storage in my 2 and it creates a problem when I need to find tools that are stored in various totes and pails. I've been looking for more storage and prefer to buy a good used high quality box.

There is a snap on box locally in great shape but owner say 1 caster shot and another needs replacement. Was damaged in moving. Otherwise works like new looks new but used.

How easy is it to get and replace the casters on these boxes. Ill go look at it as long as I know it's a bolt on caster not welded on?

Also anything to check for specifically other than dents, locks working and normal drawer operation ?

KRL casters are held on by four bolts with 1/2" hex heads. I don't know about the Classic, etc. but you can look up the spare parts for that model on the SO website.

However, in my case the original casters are NLA and the current replacements are about 1/4" to 3/8" taller, which made the box rock. I swapped the new wheel into my old caster assembly to make it work. The caster itself was OK (it was a flat-spotted wheel that I needed to replace, but only the entire caster assembly was available).

In this case 'old' is the spring-type with a brake that jams on the tire, and the new style is rubber-suspended with a brake on the axle. By mixing and matching some parts it was pretty easy to put the new wheel into the old caster to retain the correct height. The new caster will go back to SO (warranty core) and maybe they can just put a new wheel onto it.

Retail on that caster assembly is several hundred dollars.

Found that casters are the cheapest through snap on.
There are casters for the transmission cart that supports 2k lbs that were cheaper than the same size but not same rating at HF.

The same style (but slightly smaller bolt spacing) 4 bolt casters are used on the KRA (classic, heritage) boxes too.

I just looked on the SO website and the unsprung KRL casters (could be same as Classic/KRA) are only about $100 each. Mine were sprung and I think he said they would have been $2xx.

im installing lockers on my EPIQ now , they come with snap on brand casters, not swivel though. but they are to be removed after the locker is installed. Even on my larger box , they have you use a floor jack to lift the roll cab to install the locker and remove the transport caster set.

Snap-On uses standard casters. You can buy replacements from McMaster Carr. Just match the dimensions and capacity.

At last. Somebody that is willing to look beyond SO for a stock off the shelf, generic part. McMaster Carr is good but the first place I would look for casters is a caster distributor. I have seen them on line. There are pages and pages of casters in their on line catalogs. Without SO pricing, the cost will be far lower. It is reasonable to assume that SO did not make their own casters, any way. Since the new caster is taller by a small amount and they are just bolted on, why not just shim up the other three with a few washers.

Faultless manufactures the casters that Snap On uses. Why not just warranty the damaged caster? I bought a used KRL 761 off craigslist. Casters were shot. I E-mailed Snap On and was sent a full set, no charge. I told them I was not the original owner, didn't matter. Snap On has the best warranty and customer service hands down.

I figured casters were a wear item. That's great to know. Seems I've been out bid. I went up but not enough. I told him if this guy flakes out I can be over inside of 1 hour and I have the cash provided all is as stated and he helps me load it.

If the caster(s) was/were damaged I'd thoroughly inspect the box to make sure it isn't structurally tweaked (out of square).

And Jarvis custom makes the ISO-Ride casters for SO and pretty much only SO.

I simply got bigger ones and redrilled out the pattern on my SPG box, now next to gonna be floor locks to level out the pair due to slope of my floor.

ISO-Ride; there's a term I was forgetting. The new ISO-Ride caster I have has 4.5"x4.125" bolt pattern, 3/8" holes. It's stamped with the SO logo and part number 8-30839A. 6"x2" wheels.

So, any KRL that will accept the ISO-Ride caster will accept casters with that same bolt pattern. There were other holes on my 1001 which seemed to provide a smaller bolt pattern but I didn't pay real attention to them to see if they were threaded or not.
