Hey guys,

I have a bench grinder with a 1/2 arbor. I am looking for something similar to a drill chuck, that would thread on to the grinder with the opposite end having an adjustable end that I could use a variety of different size shanks in. I want to be able to use a variety of smaller polishing cylinders, cones, balls etc. and a lot of the smaller ones I want to use, are all on a shank. I included a picture of my grinder also.

I have looked everywhere with no luck,we’ll sort of. I did find the one included in the photo, but I don’t want to spend that much and I thought maybe I could ask the forum for ideas or help. I realize I could use a drill, but an adapter would be so much easier.

Any info would be appreciated

The correct way to do this is with a Baldor Dental Lathe (it's just a small grinder) and you buy chucks for it. This is to do exactly what you want.

However, measure your threads on your grinder shaft. Are they 1/2"-13 or 1/2"-20 ? Probably 1/2"-13. On second thought that is an import grinder, probably has metric threads. You need to determine what the thread is.

Then buy a cheap chuck with those threads.

Here's a 1/2"x20 for example. $25. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002UYP0OA/?tag=atomicindus08-20

1/2” arbor shank bench grinders, particularly if yhey were made in Adia, may not be a standard 1/2”-13 thread.
I’m not sure about all grinders, but I have an older Makita grinder with 1/2 arbors, and the thread seems to be 1/2BSW or Whitworth threaded, with 12 threads per inch.
The thread angle is also slightly different.

If you needed an adaptor, you might need a specialty one.

The other issue with grinders is that one side runs clockwise, and the other side runs counter clockwise.
Some drill chucks really only hold well going in one direction.
Keyed chucks, and drill chucks made for reversing drills would be an exception to this.
The other issue is burrs and certain types of cutting bits would be uni directional as well, as are certain arbor mandrels for smaller bits.

If you really want to do this, you might have to have a a tapered drill arbor drilled out and threaded for the grinder shaft.
I run across places that will make custom tapered adapters for drill chuck etc. so this might be an option.
You might have to pony up for Whitworth threading taps or thread cutters though.

I suspect the reason this isn’t common, are safety reasons, since holding a workpiece up to bits on a grinder arbor could cause the work to be grabbed pulling the fingers of the person holding the workpiece into the cutter.
The cloth buff wheels on buffers are kniwn to grab stuff that is being polished.
